I have been a believer, but I thoroughly lost faith in Atkins.
Don't do it. Period.
If you change your white bread for brown, shoot your softdrinks straight through the head, and scratch some refined foods in favor of "real food", AND you decide to walk the extra stairs or park your car a bit further from your house.. You are going to lose those five pounds without diet regimes and all the nightmares they bring.
Five pounds are nothing. I could stand to lose 100 pounds. And trust me: eat healthier, more fiber and greens, and use your body just a bit more and you'll lose it painless and more importantly: in a healthy way which won't come back to haunt you.
Atkins made me lose 35 pounds. Halleluja! I gained 50 faster than the Tourettesguy can say PISS
Eat low-sugar and let your starches be chock full of fiber. Don't scratch your primary fuel, glucose, because Mr Atkins says so.
Atkins will make you lose those five pounds in three days... but it will be water, all of it, and you have no choice but to drink it right back on.

It works like gangbusters. But the first two weeks are almost all water-weight. Which isn't bad, it just isn't fat that you're losing.
Two caveats, though.
First, get the book and follow it to a T. Do not fsck around. I know people who don't succeed and I know people for whom it has worked wonders and the single difference between the two groups is how strictly they followed the rules. You'll even need to lay off things like nuts and cheese and salt for a while.
Second, if you leave the diet you will gain it back. Consider how willing you are to eat no carbs ...pretty much never.

My sister is taking nursing and she had to take a bunch of nutritional courses. According to her, the atkins diet does work, but for all the wrong reasons.
Apparently there are these things called ketones that our body uses to produce energy. They are not as good as what you normally use, but are useful in stressful situations like when you're starving. So it is like running a car on really shitty, dirty gasoline rather than nothing at all.
The atkins diet limits your the types of food that you use, and forces your body to make ketones. This is why apparently you can eat a lot and still lose weight. But the process is not good for your body.
Incidentally ketones are also what make meth heads breath smell like rotten apples, being awake several days apparently also triggers the ketone process.
I'm no expert though and I'm just going on what my sister told me.

Nope, Atkins induction is very strict and "strict" means depriving your body of what it needs. Look in the atkins book and he stresses that vitamin and mineral supplements are MANDATORY. Why? Shit ain't healthy.
Foods with carbs aren't "foods with carbs" but rather they are entire foodgroups with clusters of vitamins minerals etc that occur in nothing other than these foods.
What are we talking about? Five pounds! Thats 17.5 megacalorie. You can lose this in a few months if you do nothing other than a bit more exercise.
With Atkins the problem isn't to get the weight off, because you will, and quite rapidly. I lost over a quarter of a pound a day for MONTHS, and thats not counting water. The problem is that you either have to mangloe your body with Atkins for the rest of your life, or gainm the weight (and more) back on.
Mr Atkins is clear enough about it: Atkins only works if you do it for the rest of your life. All your life eating meat and fish and creaming your pants when you think of lettuce
Dr Atkins wants you to:
-eat vitamins which his foods do not provide -eat minerals which his foods do not provide -eat fibre which his foods do not provide -fight the consistent urge to eat the most basic foods not in his diet
Hello? Not healthy!
Five pounds of weight is a very manage-able weight issue, don't go on atkins because of as little as that.

I think what you said kind of meshes with what I said. But bottom line is the diet is not healthy.
Atkins tricks your body into thinking it is under stress. And usually your body counters stress with slowing your metabolism, making you gain a lot of weight when you go back to your regular eating habits.

Only in America could the atkins diet works.
Look at the atkins friendly menus in restuarants.
2 pounds of bacon smothered in melted cheese topped with ranch dressing.
shit like that. No wonder every fat ass in america wants to be on the atkins diet.

You've got no idea how readily you can come to loathe that, if just about everything you eat is rich to the max.
Those things are only tasty because it is in contrast to your normal diet.

Correct. You can also reach stages of ketosis without Atkins, but under strict guidelines with a nutrtionist and a physician. I went on a ketosis diet when I was bodybuilding as a teen and holy shit did I get ripped. I lost a bit of strength, but that's not what bodybuilding's about..
Also, the rotten apple thing? No, worse. Very worse. The most rotten casing with a few dead rats that managed their way in and your cat decides to piss and shit all over it.
I would never recommend Atkins or a ketosis diet to anyone. It's dangerous to your health (ketosis). If you can reach this stage with Atkins, then fuck that.
IMO the only way this diet works is if you're ingesting too many carbohydrates, are morbidly obese, or are EXERCISING and taking the needed supplements as well.
Five pounds? I lost my 30 pounds of winter weight just by changing my diet to soup, salads, and sandwiches; sans exercise. The rest is just falling off by being active.

You can get most of your energy from carbs and be really healthy. This is what the majority of the worlds population eats, and what humans have traditionally eaten since the dawn of civilization.
Excercise and not over eating are the key.

America has really fallen to bloody hell. The american dream is dead, peace and prosperity are left in the dust, and everyone just wants the quick fix: drugs, alcohol, diets.. the list goes on. Take some responsibility and use some common sense, damn..
"Oh, the corporations are making me fat" No, sorry lardass, you are.
"The drugs made me do it" Sorry addict, you did this to yourself.
"My husband only hits me when he drinks... He still loves me!" Sorry lady, if he's beating you senseless he doesn't.
Nothing is anybody's fault anymore.
Society's making me ill at a rapidly increasing rate, yet my social anxiety is lessening, LOL.

Didn't the creator of the Atkins diet die of something ironic, like heart disease? I guess that wouldn't be too much ironic as it is funny/stupid. Irony is when the opposite of what you expect to happen does happen. If he was following his diet, eating high fat/protein foods and few carbs, it's no wonder he died of heart disease.
EAT AS MUCH STEAK AND BACON AS YOU WANT! YOU'LL LOOK GREAT! WHO CARES IF YOUR ARTERIES ARE 90% CLOGGED BY THE TIME YOU DROP THE WEIGHT?
That diet is crap. Especially for losing 5lbs. I lost 7lbs during my last trip to New York. I hardly ever walk around here because everything is so spread out, we drive everywhere. In New York, everything is within walking distance if you take the subway, plus driving in the city is crazy as hell. I walked about 3-4 miles a day (unknowingly) and I dropped 7lbs in 4 days.
I wish I only wanted to drop 5lbs. That'd be nice. Around 3 months ago, I wanted to lose 50. In those 3 months, I've lost 28lbs. Only about 20 more to go... wewt.
What have I done? Well, I do take adderal to help my concentrate during classes/school work, of course that kills my apetite. I eat about one meal a day, when I get home from school or work. That meal used to be pizza or some kind of chicken, something else fairly fattening/calorie loaded. Now I eat healthy. I've been eating a lot of sandwiches and salads. I've only eaten one meal a day for the past 4-5 years and I'm fine. Most people can't get by with that schedule. Most people get hungry(not something I experience really) or their blood sugar drops. If that's you, eat small healthy snacks. I've also started drinking a LOT more water. Particularly ice water. The reason ice water helps is because your body has to expend extra energy(use more fat/carbs) to bring the water to body temerature. *nerd content* Your body has to expend a LOT of energy to cool down water because water has such a high specific heat(not easy to change it's temp). Water also has no carbs or calories that your body can absorb so it's a win win situation. If you drink drinks that have sugar in them, cut them out of your diet. Replace them with water.
Important note about my dieting style: You must also consider that I'm 6'6". Losing weight when you are as tall as I am is quite different than someone of average height, say 5'9"ish. I regularly gain/lose 10-15lbs of water weight a day. I can easily weigh 240lbs in the morning, and by the time I go to bed I'll weigh around 255lbs. If you're a small-normal sized guy, thinking you'll lose 30lbs in 2.5-3 months is crazy.

Carbs - the most basic form of nutrition that your body NEEDS for energy. It's the base of the food chain for a reason.
Protein - Most americans get too much of this as it is. If you are working out daily, you only need 60-80 grams a day, depending on your body weight. Most americans get more than that from the normal american diet, and they sit on their asses all day. Too much protein results in stress on the kidneys, it can also lead to calcium depletion through urine, resulting in a much higher risk for osteoporosis.. among other things. The body also requires vitamin B6 to metabolize protein... so too much protein and you need to compensate with supplements or foods rich in B6 (which atkins does not allow)
I have personally known 3 people who have been on the atkins diet for extended periods. They are still fat. And will probably die of a heart attack in a couple of years. The one guy I still talk to hasn't lost a pound, and he complains about feeling like absolute shit all the time. You are what you eat.
Ask any pro athlete what they eat the most. The answer you will get is lots of carbs, fruits, veggies, and lean meat.
Grains have been a dietary staple of cultures around the world for thousands and thousands of years.
BREAD DOES NOT MAKE ONE FAT - BEING A FATASS DOES
You want to lose weight? Do it the smart way. Don't trick your body and deny it the basic essential nutrients it needs to be healthy. Eat a healthy, balanced diet.. which consists of lots of whole grains, raw fruits and vegetables, legumes (nuts and beans), lean meats (dont skimp on fish), and plenty of water. Avoid things like tons of sugar (a little wont kill you....), hydrogenated vegetables oils (in practically everything that is processed..) saturated and trans fats.. processed, fried and denatured foods..
Eat 4-6 meals a day. Smaller meals, more often.
Cook with: Fire, Pressure cooker, Steamer, Wok. Avoid microwaves and fryers. Avoid cooking things for too long or too much as this destroys the enzymes and vital macronutrients in many things, especially vegetables. Raw is better. If you have to cook it, cook it lightly. Don't boil vegetables and throw away the water it was cooked in.. you just threw away most of the vitamins. Eat the skins of things, don't peel it unless you have to. Especially potatoes, carrots, cucumber, etc. Pressure cookers are awesome for cooking stuff.. traps in the vitamins and all the juices and cooks it in a tenth of the time. Try cooking a potato in one.. better than any other way imo.
Part 2 - Exercise. No this doesn't mean you have to hit the gym every other day and bench press your body weight. Get some light cardio. Walk uphill, go swimming, play with your dog... do SOMETHING. Stuff that requires physical movement. Just get your muscles moving and your blood flowing.. and do it every day. Even if just for 15 minutes, that's enough.
Part 3 - Sunshine and fresh air. This goes with the walking uphill thing. An added bonus. Most people neglect this. A little goes a long way, and it can do wonders. You don't need to drink milk with vitamin D added for vitamin D.. your skin produces it from the sun. 15 minutes of sun per day is enough. The sun is good for you in moderation. Chemicals and stuff. I shouldn't have to explain fresh air. BTW drinking cow's milk is generally not very good for you, and fatties have been known to drink lots of milk.
I've never had to lose weight due to having an insane metabolism.. my problem is in gaining it. Just eat healthy and exercise and you'll lose the weight you need.
I've lived on little more than bread and nuts with the occassional orange and pear for weeks at a time. Granted it wasnt the healthiest diet and I didn't feel like a million bucks, but I also didn't feel like shit, and got all the carbs, protein, and essential amino and fatty acids my body needed to function, with a few essential vitamins and minerals to boot. The point is you need carbs in a healthy diet, just don't go nuts... everything in moderation.

Atkins is a boner
For the most part, cut down on high GI foods like hella pasta and white flour. Do you really need to eat this shit 5 times a day? No you don't, chubby. It's called common sense. But don't completely SCRAP a whole macronutrient and essential vitamins and minerals!
Eat smaller meals more often. Helps with metabolism. In conjunction with cardio or working out, your body will be in a more anabolic state and it will want to burn fat, build muscle and stay healthy. You can actually feel it. It's very rewarding and takes like 16 brain cells to pull off! Wowzers
My diet is actually a little too clean and I was getting close to overworking my body physically and mentally. I had to eat a huge burger and some bacon when I got home because I've been neglecting saturated fat (helps for hormones).
If you walk around the block a couple of times in the morning and in the evening, every day it will do WONDERS. Get a cleaner diet and take in everything with some moderation. Try it out. I'm willing to bet money that you'll drop your body fat. Moderate to low cardio doesn't mean slaving away at the rec center every day.
