taking a vacation
    #588433 - 03/24/02 07:35 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

ok i have 3 jars (tazmanian) and they are just ripping through the brf there goin insane and they are about 3 quarters of the way colonized . . im going on vacation in 3 days two actually cauing im leaving wednesday morning . . .what should do because i wont be coming home for about a week n a half. I have 8 other jars but they wont be fully colonized for about a week so it wont be bad if they colonize alittle bit more. So what am i to do with the other 3 jars tho? Should i bring them with me or just leave them there?

I would be nice to trip while on vacation i can always make the cranberry juice thing but i really wanted to see alot of little mushies so is it alright if they stay in my incubator while im gone or are they more prone to contams?

Any insight and suggestions would be appreciated!

You can do two things.

1) Take the jars out of the incubator. The lower temps will slow or stop the growth if they are cooler (eg fridge).
2) Case the jars just before you leave, with about an inch of top casing layer, and return them to the incubator. By the time you return, they would be ready to go into your growing chamber.

Enjoy

The longer they stay in the jar the stronger they will be when you take them out. Just a couple of suggestions to make sure they don't start pinning invitro is to make sure the temperature stays steady, tape up the holes if they are not already (this will help against possible contamination while you are unable to attend to them and the less oxygen there is in the jar the less chance pins will start. This will not hurt them if you are only going to be gone for a week or so, it will almost put them in suspended aninmation.) and keep them out of the light.

Oh yeah, don't feed them after midnight.

k thx . . . i wil probably end casing the taz before i leave then and just leave the other jars to fully colonize that way when i get back i can innitiate pinning on the taz's and start casing my eq's!
Either that just leave . .mayb i will jus leave in the jar and close of the air supply as was mentioned that way the mycelia will have a nice strong network in jar!

a few more questions- use peat moss is it neccesary to use lime or can i use just alittle peatmoss and does peat make a big diff?

Peat moss is not nessecary, and if you are going to use peat moss then lime is not nessecary. The peat moss makes a more porous substance for the casing to more oxygen can saturate the "soil" and the lime loweres the pH. Neither is needed if you are just going to case, but both are helpful.
