ID Possible Active, I'd rather not find out the hard way.
    #5884303 - 07/21/06 12:20 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I need some help ID'ing my first shroom.

Caught a big bunch of this stuff on a compost pile, mostly rotting stump like logs. Northwest New Jersey, just after a rain so the shrooms were very runny. I tried and failed at tripping once and the shrooms I found today smell exactly the same as the ones I had before.

1/4 inch in diameter, from 3 to 9 inches log, smoothe, somewhat thick, white stem, everything covered in black, pistachio smelling fluid, most of the caps were destroyed but the gills were black and not attached. I can't get an accurate spore print at the moment but I will update later with one. I couldn't bruise the shrooms either.

Thanks for the help.

The description sounds a lot like Coprinus, which have black gills and can turn into a dark ink like substance. No Coprinus species are active. It's not a good idea to be eating things unless you can get them identified to species.. doing that can lead to getting yourself poisoned.

Welcome to the shroomery.

Can I get any suggestions on where to go next? I don't have access to the local horse farm's dung piles and I've yet to see and P Cubes in the area. There are some isolated cow areas though.

And you wont see cubes growing in the wild in NJ unless they were put there or cultivated by people.

Look in hay bails, manure compost, sod, etc.

Do some research on Pan subbs.. can't keep asking for people to give you the answer to everything, this stuff is redundant.

All the information you could possibly want is at your finger tips... Do some research, we don't like walking people through the basics, it is your job as a hunter to be self reliant. In the end, you are the one who will experience the effects of any mushrooms you may consume. Before you ever eat any mushroom you find, you want to be 110% sure of your ID. If YOU are in doubt, then you should not consider eating any mushroom.
