Help, need advice!

Hey guys-

I need some more advice for my bird, Squirrel. Yesterday was Day 17 of her Treasure Coast cakes (10 of them). Her incubator setup is not very good (lagre box, with an ambient heater) and all the moisture was getting sucked out of her cakes. Some of them you could actually look at from the side and see the cake have an indentation. So, I guess she kinda freaked out. She took out 3 of her cakes (all of her cakes are approx. 80% colonized btw) and she broke of the uncolonized chunks and she cased what was left over. The mycelium had fully penetrated the cake in the parts that was colonized. But, she cased those 3 cakes... Into one large, Lasagna foil pan... And her other jars seem stalled. She has 2 radiant heaters, but she will not have a Styrofoam incubator setup until early next week. But she has some questions and needs some advice...

1. Was it a bad idea to case the cakes? (they are now sitting in her wannabe terrerium, with a radiant heater... She followed the casing for dummies tek) (The casing layers go vericulite-cakes-vermiculite)
2. She didn't use distilled spring water for her casing. She just used normal water from the refrigerator dispensor. Is this OK?
3. How can she stop the jars from stalling? A filter is in order, correct? I heared that Kleexes were actually developed during WWI as a gas mask filter... Would one of these work as a filter, (or a coffee filter), or should she use something else? (she doesn't want to order any of those filter disks, btw)
4. Should she just birth all of these cakes early, and start anew when she gets her Styrofoam incubator setup going? (She has Matias Romero, PESA Hawaiian, and Amazonian)
5. If so, which strain should she use? :P

1- Its never a bad idea to case, its a lot more productive than cakes, in my opinion.

2- get rid of the heater. Most shrooms will grow in extreme temps. If you can stand the cold, so can the shrooms. Adding heat ussually doesn't help shrooms. Its the main cause of overlay in our set ups.

3- tap water is fine to use. At the temple , we only use tap, and never had a problem. If you are paranoid, use a cap of hydrogen peroxide in the water to kill any germies.

4-to stop the jars from stalling, you could do a few things. First, don't pack jars too tighly before pressurizing. Or , you could untape lids during incubation. Also, half way through incubating, flip jars, so bottom can get air exchange. If you have a deep enough verm layer on top of cake, your chance for contams is very low. Keep jars in dark cabinet, and handle as infrequently as possible, and your jars will be fine. The micron fliters are good, but so far, a coffee filter has worked fine as well. But in the end, we just skip the filters, and so far, all of our jars are fine.
The most important thing to remember is that shrooms grow just fine in the wild. We we start adding heat and meddling, thats when things start to go ary.
Follow the tek closely, and you should be ok. Good luck, I hope this helped.

Thanks for the advice :smile: I turned down the heater... And I guess I will tell my bird to just make some filter from coffee filters and put those on her jars... Then she'll start some more jars when she gets her setup completed... Thanks again :smile:
