coir as a bulk substrait
    #5883926 - 07/21/06 11:18 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

I've read somewhere that cocco-coir can be used as both a cassing material as well as a bulk substrait. is this right?
What i propose to do is a 50/50 h-poo/ coir bulk substrait. Think ill be ok?.... running low on h-poo and want it to go as far as i can with what I have.
any input from those that have tried this or tried just strait cococ-coir, would be greaty apreciated

I use straight coir all the time and love it.

It will work great half and half with poo.

What about the potency? does the strait cococ-coir really have enough nutriants to give the mushies the potency they deserve?

yeah coir will work as s substrate, Ive never tried it but there's been posts about it. I bet mixing 50/50 w/ h-poo will make it work even better. You also should consider straw because its cheap as dirt and shrooms love it!

Yeah i know all about straw.... started a straw / poo compost pile. hence the fact that im running low on poo. hopefully it will be ready for use in a month or so.
two bails of straw (wheat straw) mixed with about 40 lbs of h-poo. although i need to remember to flip it more often ... the stuff already breaking down and its nly been 2 weeks or so

absolutely

i hydrate my coir with some dilute coffee water or sometimes add some used coffee grounds right in to the mix for a nitrogen boost, which theoretically helps support potency (being careful about my wording, saying "supports" potency rather than "increase"... no need for you substrate/potency arguers to get going here ) but at any rate straight coir all alone works.  mixed with poo, will work nice indeed.

nice! i really want to start a compost pile but since apartment living doesn't allow ill stick to 50/50 poo straw, it works fine for me! maybe next time ill toss in ~10% or so of coir to see how it does in comparison.

uhh yeah I just made some coir substrate last night after CC and I exchanged some info. I hydrated my Coir and added a little less than a teaspoon raw coffee grounds. I let it sit for about 30 minutes then I pc'ed is for 25 minutes. I took a spare PF cake I had and crumbled it and mixed it in and now it's sitting in my incubator..

When you PC coir do you just plop it into the PC without a jar? That would seem like the fastest method, but it seems like it might dehydrate it a bit.

I've used coir as a bulk substrate with no heat treating whatsoever. As long as you spawn with a 1/4 ratio or better, it colonizes faster than the bad guys can get a foothold. If you're going to use coir in a casing layer(not recommended) it needs to be pasteurized.

Glad to see it catching on. I just wish coir wasn't so darned expensive. Three or four years ago when I first started recommending coir as a substrate instead of casing material, everybody thought I must have fallen off a turnip truck and bumped my head. You can also mix it with straw to help fill in the gaps, but don't go overboard.

Don't use it if you're growing shiitake mushrooms though. For some reason, they refuse to fruit if coir is in the substrate.

yep im totally sold on it, im a coir convert

its expensive when compared to some things, especially if you have free access to poo.  but pound for pound its cheaper (for me at least) than say ordering tennstud.

i love how compact the bricks are and how much it expands when its time to use it.  its so easy to store too.  i'd rather keep a bunch of bricks of it on the shelf in my house than a giant bag full of shit.

You'd have to be more specific on weight with the brick of coir, then people could probably tell you. I would imagine it would absorb a lot of water though.

I got a 15 KG of coir as a "SAMPLE", i just spoke to a sales man of a company that makes all kind of earth mixes around here and told him that I'm doing an organig garden, he gave this brick as a sample. that was 6 month ago, still got 3/4 of it.
He gave it without a problem. i guess that when you import it by the ton you don't really care about 15KG.
lucky me.

Huh. I've never even heard of coir as a substrate mix. Musta slipped by me.

I'll give that a try my next run, 50/50 coir and hpoo. I'll probably try the coffee thing, too, see how that goes.
