I'm painting.
    #5883919 - 07/21/06 09:12 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

This is probably going to be a pretty disappointing thread since said painting is not completed enough for me to display, but I'm painting again. I got the itch to paint something, seemingly out of nowhere, after not painting for 4 years. I never really did enjoy painting, I always liked the control and speed that came with creating computer graphics.

Lately I've been thinking about computer graphics and how they relate to the art world in general. Do computer graphic artists get as much respect as say, someone who paints on a canvas? Am I an artist because I think it will earn respect? What are my motives here?

Art is such a load of crap. I'm not creating this work to be respected. I'm creating this work to get this idea out of my head. When inspiration comes, I guess its just best not to fight it.

I will post a picture of this thing eventually. Its a mix of watercolor and ink on canvas. I trust you will all respect me more for it.

I can't paint to save my life, but I still love it and would love to see it on here.

I too love that seemingly limitless control and freedom that comes with digital painting. But there is something really great about real physical paint. A pixel on a screen can only have one color, but a point that size on real paint can have all manner of texture and color. It seems like you can "zoom in" more with your eyes on real paint than you can with a digital image. At any rate, they are both radical fun.

Looking forward to seeing what has come of this rebirth of the need to paint.

You will probably see it tomorrow. I kind of finished it on the weekend, however I have a few things I still want to do to it before I show it to anyone.

I'm not 100% happy with how it turned out, but considering its my first foray into painting in such a long time, I will excuse myself from the scathing self-criticism, at least for this exercise.

Check out the thread tomorrow, it should be here.

I got to a point where I am happy enough with it to leave it alone. I've opened myself up for criticism, so bring it on! I wish I could upload a larger picture of it, but 200kb is the file size limit.

Mixed media, watercolor and ink on 8 x 10" canvas.

I like it too! Damn, that's bad ass.

Do you do the ink first, then the watercolor, or vice versa? I think I might have found a new medium...

I did the watercolor backgrounds first, then inked over top of it. I just used a couple of different width sharpies, for maximum control over how much ink I'm laying down. Ink pens and india ink scare me a bit. Too much dripping!

Thanks for the compliments, guys. I'm much less afraid of painting now than I have ever been. Hopefully there will be more to come.

Kake: that's about as random of a pattern there is. This all started with random doodling along the lines of what you see around the outside of the eye. It turned into a drawing in my sketchbook, and then I decided to take it one step further even. I was able to make it fit in the confines by keeping it random all the way through...

I guess if you put enough randomness together, it starts to form patterns. :smirk:
