2 Questions
    #588359 - 03/24/02 06:07 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

1. I cooked up 4 quart jars of rye in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for one hour. Each had 260 grams ( a cup and a half ) of organic rye berries and 200 ml of distilled water. They look pretty good. Nice, not too wet, not too dry. I inoculated them with 1.5 cc's of B+ spore solution each and shook them all up. That was 4 or 5 days ago and I'm not seeing any growth. They aren't in any kind of incubator or anything. Should I worry yet? How long until I should?

2. When I get these jars colonized and it's time to case, do I really need to sterilize my casing material? I'll be using verm right out of the bag and distilled water. There seems to be people who think sterilization is imperitive and others who say it's a waste of time. What's the deal?

1. Give it a few more days before you worry. What temps are your jars at? Might speed things up if you keep them in the low 80's.

2. I haven't yet but I'm beginning to think I should. I use 50/50+ though. I've read straight verm doesn't need it but have not yet tried straight verm.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

1) If you have a vermiculite seal on top then open the holes for a few hours and turn the jars upside down. This will add oxygen. Also, smell the hole. Try not to breath into the hole just pull air into your nose. If is smells fine (kinda like dirt or oatmeal) then a little air and a little more time should be fine.

2) Sterility with just vermiculite is not too big of an issue but it never hurts. Technically there is nothing organic in vermiculte for contams to get a foot hold on and the only food for contams is the rye and that should be fully colonzed.
