Do great intelligence and great stupidity go hand-in-hand?

Ok, so I've been thinking: It seems to me that human beings are both the smartest and the dumbest creatures ever to walk the face of the earth. Other creatures manage to go by instinct alone, and do rather well as a species. We, on the other hand, devote our best and brightest to creating technologically advanced weapons to bomb the shit out of each other. Sure, other animals fight and kill each other, but they don't go planning out fights that last for years on end and drain their resources in the process. Other animals don't create technology that will ruin their environment and its ability to sustain their own existence. They're not smart enough to be that stupid.

Well, I think they would, they just don't have our body shape which you must admit that brought us closer to where we are, we have two perfectly functional hands with which we started to build and never knew where to stop. Animals also didn't had much room to mentally evolve like we did still because of us being the no. 1 creatures out here. But you can never know. I think they would do it if they had the chances or the means. Instinct, we ad it as strong as them at our beginnings and I'm sure that the same or even smaller IQ. What happens I think is that these are everys species issues and we all deal with them, killing for need, pleasure or a more "elaborate" plan. And after we gt our asses kicked because of lol... us and creating tones of catastrophes, maybe we'll consider stopping that. And, lol, yes, it's stupidity and it happens all over and still after all this time none has learned something from it and it just keeps going on and on.

intelligence is the degree of stickiness of experience into memory and the accuity of recall of all those sticky bits to the measure of what is around us.
stupidity seems to be action that makes things worse.
sometimes by utter inaction, and steadfastness, a rock seems intelligent but it is not likely absorbing experience, and certainly not displaying any acuity of recall.
it is not easy to judge intelligence unless you can see the same patterns or understand the language of rocks.

Yeah quite krazi
and its not going to get any better
the more we find intelligent ways to do things
the more opportunity we'll have to be stupied
maybe intelligence needs to be redirected such as....
finding methods to become wiser, maybe

I think a lot of the problems of which you speak will be solved once the older generations die off and newer more enlightened perspectives rise to power.
Sure, we have spent a lot of time and effort building weapons to destroy eachother,
but that same technology could be put to good use. Its not the technology that is evil, but our intentions for its use.
Did you know that the data from the nazi concentration camp experiments was later used to design the space suit?
The people in power now (baby boomers being advised by the AARP), are subject to an old-world mentality, an 'us vs them' mentality.
But the kids growing up these days, we have the internet, we respect other cultures. The concept of the 'global village' does not frighten us. Soon, it will be our turn, and things will change. Perhaps we will point those missiles at the sky instead of at eachother. Perhaps we will break the cycle of pettiness and war, and instead unite as one race to do something productive, and heal the wounds between our nations and cultures.
You look back at history, and you see a pattern emerging: over time, we have become more peaceful, more humanitarian. You think its bad now, think about 200 years ago, or 2000 years ago. We are getting better, just not as fast as the more intelligent of us would like.

IIRC, the baby boomers were the hippie generation that said they were going to change the world through peace and love. I fail to see how our generation is going to succeed where they failed.

they didn't get as far as they wanted,
but they did lay the foundation for things to come.
I'd say their greatest achivements were the moon landing and the internet.
Our generation will succeed where they failed, because we have grown up with things they didn't have, or had to fight to have: sexual liberation, equal rights, the relaxation of censorship, better global communication, and superior technology.
It is getting better, man! Just don't be so impatient. You know its not over until the fat Jesus sings, right

I'd much rather see humans with nuclear weapons than chimps. Chimps seem awfully impulsive and irresponsible. Unfortunately, things aren't always the way I want them to be.

Amen.
Our generation will launch our planet and collective civilization into a new era of awakening consciousness.
Our generation will see the end of warfare, sickness and poverty.
Our generation will replace what was once a dismal acceptance of human inadequacy - a sense of defeat from our past pain and failure - with a new hope founded on concrete pillars of love, truth, beauty and kindness - creativity, diversity and expansiveness.
It is our generation's responsibility to 'remain steadfast in our resolve to abstain from thoughts of harm' toward ourselves or others. (Dr. Wayne Dyer).
You are right, Doctor J, in citing the internet as a key catalyst for the N-Gen's rising toward a sense of universal humanity. Just look at how the youth embrace each other from all over the world - every race - every color - every denomination - slowly but steadily shedding the mentality from previous generations and rejecting orders to hate people from X region, X religion, X belief structure, etc. - even if it's simply because one would rather watch funny video clips of kittens than pick up a rifle.
We are getting better - much, much better.
In the face of so much darkness - let us rise up as the new leaders of the world. Let us remain steadfast in our resolve to focus on the light.
The old will die. We will replace them. And we will realize the full potential of team humanity.
Given a choice - isn't it clear?
What are we waiting for?
We are what the world has been waiting for.
Ask not what others can do for you - but what you can do for all of humanity and the world we live in.
What an honor and a privilege.

Once George Carlin and I realized this we became a tad cynical but kept our sense of humor. I much prefer hanging out with canines. There's about 5 humans I know that I can stomach.

Carlin was the christ of this age, without him I don't know where our culture would be, but I can guess it would be much more repressed... or oppressed.

I believe that intelligence is a right that we have not yet earned.
We have only seen a glimpse of what our intelligent minds are capable of and this will never improve if we continue to act in such a way.

Global warming really resonates with the idea you talk about. Through our intelligence, we create potentially unreversable blunders. Nonetheless, I would say that for a vast majority of people, intelligence has a mollifying effect. Look at the intelligent people around you. Do you consider them likely to inflict harm? Its the individuals that act like primitive apes thatt scare the shit out of me; those that lack intelligence, but have at their disposal means of instigating harm.
