It took me a year to find them..Once I found them I see them all over its kinda scary!
All I can say about finding Gyms is I never kept any tell I had some Bruise Green... Blue Bruising on a yellow mushroom= Green
Look on dead wood and at the bases of Living trees such as Water Oaks and other Oak's and Hardwoods.. Kinda funny the Gyms in the photos above are on a Yellow Pine Stump

Once again, venture up here!
You can ID a lot more than I can, since I am a complete beginner... There are hundreds of species up here that I haven't bothered to ID yet... plus the amanitas which I don't dare to ID...

Nice finds YESSUP!!!
I found some Gymnopilus junonius a few months ago in this pile of woodchips in the parking lot of the school i attend. I didn't not know what they were until a few months later when i recognized some photos of Gymnopilus, and i still had the dried specimens I had found in the wood chip pile so I was able to identify them along with my memory of what they looked like fresh... which was not much different from the dried specimens. The spore print was a dark rusty orange, and there is some evident greening (YESSUP explained ^) in the stipes.
There were other species growing in the wood chips, including Coprinus sp., Chlorophyllum molybdites, some stink horns, Agaricus sp., and a few others I can't remember...
Anyway, just sharing the habitat i found them in and what was growing near by.

Mine pins always green reaasonably well (and will spot green upon damage to even the more mature specimens). Nice finds. Once I find a patch I can usually get a flush (esp. in a mulch pile) once a month for four months or so. My last gym haul was so big I couldn't dry all the motherfuckers. Miss those days... Again cudos.

I'll have to check the local "Pecan Park" next rain while I'm still in Texas. I've always wanted to try the big gyms. Nice Find, YESSUP!
