I have been making my 1st set of casings for about 2 weeks and i was just wondering about how many sq.in. would be best for 1, 1/2 jar? Is the thicker better?

thicker is better for the most part, but a single half pint is only gonna take you so far. i have some disposable ziplock brand tupperware like containers that are 5"x5", 2" tall. These are a good size to make small casings with a single cake. The crumbled cake will fill it about 80% of the way, leaving just enough room for your casing layer.

WHAT?
If you're casing 1/2 pints, use as many as it takes to make at least a 2 inch layer on the bottom of whatever you're casing in, then add at the most a 1/2 inch of a casing layer... I use a 1/4-1/2 inch casing layer and it's been working incredibly well for me.

more is better for sure but you totally can do a single cake (if thats all ya got) with like a 1.5" sub depth and still get mushrooms on average about 4" high weighing close to a dry gram a piece. i like little casings as houseplants for novelty purposes and have done it many times.

Yeah, I'm going to prepare a slurpee cup casing tonight... I only have a few houseplants, so I figure a few slurpee house-shrooms would be fun!

soda bottle terrariums work good but my favorite is the pretzel rod terrarium! pretzel rods rock and when you're done you got a round clear plastic cylindrical containers that are 8" diameter, 8" high. a little wet perlite in the bottom, a few small holes in the lid and on the sides covered w/micropore tape or polyfill stuffed monotub style, and you got an awesome maintenence free mini terrarium that can accomodate a wide mouth 1/2 cake, 2 regular mouth tall 1/2 pint cakes, or a small casing like the container size i mention. fits on a desk, a shelf, whatever.
