My question is this, is rubbing alcohol flammable and useable for flame sterilization?

It is flammable.
What I do is I use one of those flame warmers for camping and keeping catering foods warm.
I light the wick. Run the needed up and down till its glowing red. Don't let it stay there too long or it could melt the plastic that holds it to the syringe. Then I let it cool for a sec and dip it into a shotglass of rubbing alcohol. From there I inoculate!

Rubbing alcohol will create soot that will turn your tools/needles black. Use denatured alcohol from the paint department at a hardware store. Don't dip in alcohol afterward, just let cool for a few seconds and use. The first few drops of liquid will cool the needle. RR

I just squirt some alchohol into a shot glass and wash my hands and carefully (next to a sink) light it. It slowly burns and works great for me. I cannot say enough how careful you need to be if you do it like this though. People have gotten burned before. I haven't had any problems myself but you never know.

I agree with roger, but unfortunately, a lot of the time walmart is the only place to get things like that locally... Which is walmart's evil plot in the first place... they put small local business out of business by offering everything cheaper, then raising prices after the compitition is eliminated.

I've never had much of a problem with soot from rubbing alcohol. Don't use it in alcohol lamps though. For flame sterilization it works fine. I would use 80% rather than 70% though. Pure alcohol doesn't kill as effectively as 70%, so keep that in mind.
It's best to have a beaker with all your tools in it points down. When you need one remove it and flame it over your burner. No need to heat to red hot.
Tip: Red "heet" is pure isopropyl. It's a fuel drying agent and you can get it at any gas station for a reasonable price.
BTW yellow "heet" is methanol.

it's ok to use any fire for flame sterlizing... it's fire for christs sake... you could use a giant burning log and get nice results. I use a regular bic cigarette lighter because it's small, easy to use, easy to sterlize, easy to hold with gloves on, it's CHEAP. I could understand using an alcohol lamp or constant flame for doing a LOT of sterile work all at once, but seriously, a flame is a flame, go hog wild, light your pubes on fire and sterlize with that...
