I've notice flies in one my bins w/ my casing 60/40 verm/coir. Well, I was wondering if that means my casing in contaiminated??!! if the flies were born in the the casing, does this mean they might be sterile? i doubt it but wanted your take on it.

If the casing was sterilized, the fly eggs would have been destroyed in the sterilization process. So if the eggs lived, so might contams. But it doesn't sound too good.

They are probably fungus gnats, look them up in the contamination forums. They are just flies trying to get high... Put up a fly strip!

Mmm.. On a side note.. fruit flies will drink brandy until they die from alcohol poisoning... Ruined 85mL of some of my fine homemade brandy damnit!
P.S. Im sure that if the fly larva/eggs survived the "sterilization" process so could contams... Keep a close eye out!

They're attracted by the smell of the mycelium and they're looking for dinner. They don't eat much and I've never seen them cause contamination. Fly paper or the vacuum cleaner take care of them. If you have a lot and use the vacuum cleaner, put a flea and tick collar for dogs in the vacuum bag to make sure they stay there once you suck them in. RR
