alright , i crumbled up some cakes and put them ontop of some perlite for a few days, its spread out pretty good. Its time to case them now. I've got peat moss and potting soil also.... can potting soil be used? I've never heard of anyone using it. Also... is it necessary to sterilize the peat moss or whatever i end up using in the oven first?

potting soil can be used. i've done it, it works. peat is a better choice, if you have it you should use it, mixed half and half with some vermiculite, which i'd assume you have left over after having prepared your cakes?
the proper way to prepare a casing is to pasteurize it. you can sterilize it though with near similar results. an easy way that lands you somewhere in between the two that i use is hydrate it, put it in a covered container (loosely covered like you would microwave anything; leave the lid of whatever you're using cracked a little) in the microwave and nuke for 2-3 minutes; wait about 15, nuke again for a few minutes, again wait for 15, nuke a third time, and let it cool several hours. spread over top and use a spray bottle to adjust moisture if it dried out on you some in the microwave.

hay is a bad idea. not only does it not have the right characteristics of a casing, it will contaminate very easily.

Good thing you found some. Was gonna say quit with the perlite BS :P
You can sterilize your verm by microwaving it after bringing it to field capacity, thats what I always do (in a clean microwave of course)

i know i vermiculite is crucial. But why? Im not going to substitute it... im going to use it. But doesnt it serve the same purpose as perlite? What makes vermiculite better?

How do you have cakes if you don't have any vermiculite?

HA! Good answer bro! Read my pinning strategy to learn more. GL

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Vermiculite ABSORBS water... Perlite is a porous(sp?) stone that generally just wicks water... In gardening I believe it's used to increase drainage. Whereas vermiculite actually retains a LOT of water. So if you used perlite, it might work, but it would dry your casing layer out fast, so you'd have to spray a lot more than is feasible.
