Day 6 since birthing....advise?
    #5880408 - 07/20/06 05:27 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

PF Tek.
25 days incubation
Birthed 7/14
Humidity ix consistant at 95%, using perlite humidification.

Mycelium is growing in all directions...ie wherever it can get a foothold on like the leftovers of the dry verm. layer.

1 cake has a tiny pin on it this morning, and the head looks like it may have alittle mycelium on it. Should my humidity be higher>?

Temps vary somewhat, any where from 73deg. up to 80deg.

Strain is Z-Strain from hawks eye.

By the way I am TOTALLY STOKED this is my very first success at  :mushroom2: cultivation and will be providing me with my first experience of eating them "fresh" and not dry, hoping that will make a big difference in the magic. Although I have no complaints about any of the dry ones that I've had, Ive just read that fresh ones are more magic.

if the cap has myc on it the humidity is too high you might want to lower it rather than increasing

But the tek says 95%-100% is optimal for cakes, I'm running 95% steady, surely I wouldn't wanna lower it, since I'm using perlite humidification I don't even know how I could lower the humidity.

With all due respect I think your wrong.

Anyone else?

i know what the tek says but if you got myc growing on your mushies then there is too much humidity anyone else want to tell him? one way to lower it is to drill holes in the side and put polyfill in the holes. also do you have any FAE?also is there standing water under your perlite? is your perlite damp or soaked?

keep it at 90-95% contastant, just because a little myc on the cap doens't mean it will have difficulty growing. keep everything constant and dont forget to make print lol. you can also clone the biggest mushroom if you want

I didn't mention FAE because I don't know what it is. Please enlighten me.

O.K. my friend, yes my perlite is soaked, and yes there is standing water under my perlite.

I wouldn't say that I have mycelium growing on my mushies, since I have only one tiny tiny pin head with a little white hair, not quite qualifying as mushies (plural) ya know what I'm sayin?

If I should lower the humidity what do you suggest? Suctioning out some of the h2o? Drilling holes for ventilation? Both? Wait till I see more growth and then make a decision? Which is probably what I will do.

One thing is for sure, I MUST SUCCEED!!!!! My first attempt failed due to contams, this time I have to succeed.

With Perfect Love,

Phungi

I fan them 2-3 times a day. doesn't that qualify as fresh air exchange?

Like I said PF Tek.

fanning will work but it is a pain. i fish tank pump will work better. also it is bad to have standing water in your fruiting chamber. you might want to fix that first. if you drill holes about 1 inch above your perlite level and put polyfill micropore tape or tyrvek filter over the holes this will help. HUMIDITY and standing water is the peoblem if you are fanning.

Phungi, I grow a lot of cakes, and I will tell you that you need 100% humidity for PF cakes. They will simply grow better in total humidity. Lower humidity ranges apply to casings and bulks. 3 air exchanges per day is fine for cakes. Fresh air promotes growth and holds contams at bay. A little white on new pins is very normal. When the fruits become mature they will likely even develop fuzzy white "leg warmers," as a nut over at Mycotopia dubbed it.
It really sounds as though you are doing fine. GL.

And you can float perlite if you treat it with some bleach every week or two, as long as there's no water visible through the perlite.

give your cakes as much FAE as you can without lowering your humidity.
FAE is very important

dont lower your humidity, with cakes you want the humidity as close to
100% as possible

cakes do like humidity but if there is too much the myc will grow and overtake the whole mushroom. so yes cakes do like humidity but you dont want to kill your mushrooms. also standing water is not good. i guess you can treat it with bleach but i dont want to eat mushies that grew off of a cake sitting in bleach water. give your cakes as much humidity and fae without having the myc overtaking the mushrooms. a little myc on the mushroom is fine but if it gets worst take action. for now i would try to get that standing water out of there.

i agree with the standing water... however 99% rh is 99% rh thats what
is required for cakes, you cant get higher so you cant have "too much"
humidity for cakes. thats it.

Thanx guys, all this info is very helpful.

I'll syringe out the standing water. And instead of using bleach I will probably opt to just change the perlite and water with sterile perlite and water every so often.

Many thanx,

Phungi
