Oh, I love experimenting too! Even though I'm still a noob and should probably not be getting creative yet. But hey... it's working! See my mixed subrate recipe thread
This is another experiment I did (it's a rescue attempt actually). So, I had these 1/4 pint jars I was going to use to try doing cakes (instead of casings)... just for fun. The mycelium was doing great for awhile. It was really rhizmorphic and everything. Then all of a sudden it just stopped. Thinking lack of air might be the problem, I turned the jars upside down and gave them a wack so the cakes fell, making a new air pocket. But that didn't help. Oddly enough though, fluffy mycelium started growing "up" into the airpocket, but still wasn't growing over the non-mycelium area of the substrate. So, obviously, I figured they were contaminated and that's why the myscelium wasn't covering the rest of the substrate.
Well, it seemed like a wast toe just toss the all, right? And I figured I had nothing to lose. So I took them all out and crudely dissected out only the well mycelium-ated parts of the substrate, crumbed them, and cased it into a 2.5g aquarium. I didn't have enough mycelium covered substrate to do much else. But I'm not going put the 2.5g aquarium into a fruiting chamber. I thought I'd just do a "mini mono-tub" of sorts. I don't know if it will work, but we'll see. It will be interesting...

a 1/4 pints is that like 140ml or something?
maybe you packed the ingredients to compactly. try popcorn, 1 cc of spore per pint works wonders, shake when innoc leave until 20-30% colonisation then gently shake, to redistribute. my pint jar went from 30% to 70% in a matter of 48hours, will be done in two to three days.

I just stripped off 4 self healing rubber seals from some old bottles of injectable meds i had laying around and used them to make 4 LC jars. Im now going to order a bag of 100 of them. They are awesome to use for this. Not to mention how happy I am I ordered 50 Tyvek envelopes for free from the USPS.
this hobby is great. Now if i can just get some fruits to quell the wives endless banter about how much time im wasting.

Tell her some peep's go to collage for years studying mycology. You are just doing the shroomery short course.
Wow, maybe someone ought to design a SHROOMERY DIPLOMA. Which one earns, upon their first harvest. They could download it, and print it out.

Why not a DIPLOMA, also? LOL

I can guarantee that I'd never get one if I couldn't read the grow logs. Those things were my salvation.
