i have a router. do i really need my smoothwall?
    #5878816 - 07/19/06 07:12 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

well?

is the smoothwall really doing anything important to protect me that my router can't do?

the only other peice of equipment on the network besides the router and the smoothwall box is the machine i'm on right now. is it overkill?

Probably.

NAT routers defeat just about anything unless you are running services on your comp and using port-forwarding on the router.

But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

i use a little port forwarding for soulseek, but that's it. if i took down the smoothwall, i think i'd want to turn it into a server. with a server active, might i want something more than a NAT router between me and the net?

All I have between me and my network is a NAT router. When *properly* configured, it should offer as much inbound security as most consumer-level firewalls. It won't alert you if your machine gets zombified and starts spitting out millions of e-mails though, or if 'notepad.exe' starts sending weird data to a server in Taiwan. You may still want a software firewall for controlling outbound connections.

From an anal security standpoint, this is pointless. If a program wants to send data out of a computer, there is no software "firewall" in the world that can stop the program. Personally, I find the "software firewalls" to be worse than nothing because they give people a false sense of security. For 99% of the cases, a NAT based router is more than enough protection. For the 1% where the NAT router isn't enough, a "software firewall" isn't going to do a thing.

every system behind the router either already is or would be using iptables. there aren't any windows machines.
