Anyone Have A Box Like Described Here
    #5878622 - 07/19/06 06:02 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

does anyone run a system like the plans that i have posted it was given to me by a freind but just wanted to see some pics ?????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tools Needed:

Ø Battery Drill

Ø Glue Gun (Dollar store one will work but a better one is preferable)

Ø Best plastic cutting device you can think of, I used a razor knife and tin snips.

Ø A selection of hole saw bits (Small diameter ones) w/arbor and pilot bit.

Ø A standard drill bit kit so you are prepared to make any size holes required.

Ø Some good glue for securing HEPA filter material to plastic. You can use the glue gun…

Ø Several glue sticks, might use a lot of these…

Materials:

Ø 4” HEPA filter disc (Just a thin circular HEPA paper)

Ø Air pump, more powerful the better, I use the Dolphin 5 star but most anything will work.

Ø 2 - 8” or around there air stones. The blue ones with the flat backs.

Ø Few rolls of the grey or black ½” weather stripping used normally for windows and doors.

Ø ¾” thread to hose barb plastic elbow.

Ø ¾” hose barb to hose barb connector.

Ø 5’ of ¾” Clear plastic hose

Ø 4 – ¼” thread to hose barb metal elbows

Ø 2 - ¼” hose barb to hose barb connectors

Ø Fish tank heater w/controllable thermostat. I think I use 100Wers but use can use less.

Ø ¾” grommet or whatever size it is you need that fits over the fish tank heater.

Ø 2 of those clear plastic storage containers. Not huge ones, I forget the size but they are about 2 ½ ‘- 3’ long. W/lids.

Ø A plastic tub that can house your air pump. With clips on the lid if you can find them.

Ø ¼” fish tank air hose. Get like 10’. You’ll use it in replacements over time.

Ø 1’ of ¼” clear plastic hose.

Ø 1 ½ ‘ of 3” PVC

Ø 2 – 3” PVC caps (Must not have the rounded end, at least on one of them because it is a bottom)

Ø PVC glue

Ø A 3’ x 2’ flexible sheet of plastic Mylar. A good thick few mill think.

Ø A tube of clear silicone.

Ø 1’ bungee cord and 2’ bungee cord or whatever size will secure your inner tank and lid to the base tank…

Ø Cheap thermometer for bird cage or lizard tank that you can attack to the inside of one of the tubs.

Ø 2 - zip ties

You can find most of these things at Wal-Mart. If not there then check Lowes and Home Depot. The Mylar might not be at either. I went to A.C Moore or something like that for it.

Now in the center at the base of one of the long sides of one of the tanks drill a hole with a hole saw bit and pilot just a 1/16th larger than your fish tank heater. Should be just over ¾”.

Then place in your grommet and push your heater in all the way. Should be very tight so no water leaks out. This way the heater lays across the bottom of the tank. A clip with a suction cup should have came with the heater, use this to hold the heater off the bottom.

Silicone around the grommet and heater inside and out so there will certainly be no leaks and let dry.

Now fill the tank with 2” of water or just over the heater and place the other tank into it and push down to make sure the water is not going to come up over the sides. When your tank is held in here the heater will heat the water around the inner tank so it keeps an even temperature inside the inner tank.

Now on the top of one of the ends of the inner tank, just under the lip the lid grips to, drill a hole with the hole saw bit just big enough so that you can tightly fit your ¾” hose connector through. I do this just off from one of the corners so I can use one humidifier for two tanks.

Now you are going to want light to shine down into your inner tank. So I cut the center out of one of the lids and then hot glue a Mylar sheet into the opening. Just cut the center out where ever the molding of it will allow you a flat surface to hot glue to. Then cut your Mylar sheet to the same shape but at least ½” larger so that you can glue it on. Then make a glue line around the inside and the outside with the hot glue gun so it is held tight and is air tight. This IS difficult…

Now in the lip at the top of the tank with the heater in it, drill holes just large enough for the bungee cord hooks to fit through. Drill them in the top of the lip in the center of each side and end. This way when you place the inner tank in with the lid on you can use the bungee cords to hold the inner tank down into the water.

Now line the rim of the inner tank with the weather stripping so it will seal good when the lid is held on.

Glue the cap with the flat end onto the 1 ½ ‘ 3” PVC pipe.

Drill a hold in the center of the other cap just large enough so you can thread the end of the thread to barb ¾” elbow into it. And then thread it in.

Place the cap on but DO NOT GLUE.

Now find where the top cap ends and drill a hole just large enough so you can thread in the ¼” thread to barb elbow and thread it in so it is facing down. Put your 1’ ¼” clear hose on and find where your other ¼” hose elbow will go and drill and thread it in and connect the hose. Silicone these so they don’t leak. This clear tube will let you see the water level in the pipe. It should now run the length of the pipe from just under the top to somewhere below midpoint on the pipe. This way when you fill the pipe it will also fill the clear hose and keep you informed of the water level.

Now on the opposite side, also just under the point where the cap comes to, drill 2 more holes about an 1” apart just large enough to thread the other two ¼” thread to barb elbows and thread them in so they are facing down. Silicone these just so they don’t leak air since water should never be this high in the pipe.

Zip tie your air stones back to back with both hose connectors on one end and with plugs in the other end.

Attach a piece of hose long enough to go from each stone to the ¼” elbows inside the pipe. The hose should fit into the ¼” elbows on the inside and you can silicone them into them.

Take the tank that will house your air pump and cut a 3 ½ “ hole in one of it’s long sides. If you have a hole saw bit for the drill this size then use that. Then glue the HEPA disc over this hole.

Drill 2 holes just large enough to fit the ¼” hose connectors in the end of the pump tank near the base about 1” apart and place the connectors in. Silicone these so they are air tight. Now place in your air pump and run hose from the pump to the connectors on the inside. Then run a good long length of hose from each ¼” connector on the outside to the ¼” elbows on the 3” pipe going to the air stones.

Bring the cord to the air pump over the lip and run weather stripping around the tanks lip and place the lid on tight. I use the tubs with clips on the lids for this.

Now run ¾” clear hose from the elbow on the lid of the pipe to the connector on the inner tank.

This way when the air stones bubble they will generate humidity that will be pumped into your inner tank for the mushrooms. And since your pump is in a tank with a HEPA disc, it will be sterile. You can also spray the filter daily with Lysol to keep it sterile. Also your inner tank will be kept at an even heat by the heated water in the outer tank. Keep it around 86degrees, check your thermometer to see if you need to adjust your heater. If you build two tanks you can place a ¾” plastic Y with hose barbs in line from the home made humidifier and use one for two tanks. Having more than two tanks on one humidifier takes the humidity too low. Now you can take your inoculated substrate of mycelium and place it in the bottom of the inner tank. Place the lid on and bungee it down to the bottom tank and turn on the lights. Now you have a completely controlled environment.
