Really trippy sound

I just found this while surfing the internet. You really have to have headphones on to make this work. Dont worry its not some loud scary noise, I wouldnt do that to my fellow shroomerites! Without headphones it just sounds normal. Its called holophonic sound, its like extreme surround sound. With my headphones on, i cant even believe its not real, its fun to sort of try to look where it sounds like its coming from.

That's pretty neat, I only have headphones and no speakers because I like to listen to my music that way. Even in headphones it sounds like someone is behind me with a box of matches or something shaking them and running all around.

its much harder to do if you're not wearing headphones. like pretty much they can only make it work within a small area (foot or two) unfortunately.
i've been playing around with making music that works like that for headphone wearers...

I used to have creative audio software that was called dream or something that would make the audio output go in circles around your head. You could also do bass and treble separately or left and right channel separately. It was really cool.

you're about 30 years too late, haha.
this technology is nothing new, its just exploited here for your obvious enjoyment. just about any decent music these days uses this kind of 3d stereo enhancement in some way, usually its more subtle or non existent in pop music but in anything trippy, especially techno, its there, u just have to pay attention to notice it. im pretty sure pink floyd used something similar, im not sure if it was called holophonic, but it was beyond regular stereo. any audiophiles here to back this up?

It's a pretty simple process. You use two microphones placed as far apart as ears, map the right one to the right channel, left to the left, and then when played back through headphones you hear everything from the perspective of the location of the two mics. Some really fancy setups use a mock-up of a human head so the sound is most accurate. I've messed around recording with two mics before and made some cool effects.
Hope that made enough sense, I'm

Yes, what you're thinking of is called quadraphonic, and Pink Floyd did utilize it some time ago.
Quote:
Quadraphonic sound uses four channels in which speakers are positioned at all four corners of the listening space, reproducing signals that are independent of each other.
You're absolutely right. I hear this kind of thing all the time, and wasn't impressed.
