bulk spawn ratios??

hi. what should the ratio be for the following bulk substrates:

rye grain:worm castings:wheat straw
rye grain:worm castings

rye grain:wheat straw

thanks. and in the future should this go in advanced cultivation or regular?

4 quarts rye : 7 pounds worm castings : half pillowcase of straw
7 quarts rye : half pillow case of wheat straw

Although these are pretty much the maximum ratios. Much less works also.

ok. that doesnt seem to make sense to me, why would you use more spawn with less substrate?: 7 quarts of rye with a half pillowcase of straw but only 4 quarts with the same amount of straw *plus* another 7 pounds of castings... huh?

also in your ratio, is the "7 pounds worm castings" before the water is added (like out of the bag)? if the worm castings were sold by volume instead of weight, how many quarts would 7 pounds of castings be? ... about 14? (someone once told me "a pint is a pound the world arond")

what anno is trying to say (i think) is that the colonized grain:uncolonized spawn should start at a 1:10 ratio.
break the 10 down into 5:5 castings:straw if you want or use any combination 2:8 or 7:3 or whatever but its the ratio of colonized to uncolonized by volume that you cant skimp a lot on. IE: one 1/2 pint jar will not suffice to spawn 5lbs castings mixed with a big bag of straw. well you get the point.
the fact is that the ratio of worm:straw doesnt matter as far as colonization goes; both will colonize alone or mixed in any ratio. as far as optimal mix for fruiting or potency thats a different story; but it will work nonetheless if you use snough grain initially to spawn with.

one more question/clarification...

if the rye spawn were to first be used to colonize worm castings and then this larger amount of colonized material were used to spawn the wheat straw, would this ration still apply to the original rye spawn. what i mean is lets say 4 quarts of rye go into 16 quarts of worm castings (ration = 1:4). after colonization, this new amount (20 quarts of rye/castings) is used to spawn 20 quarts of straw.... is the new ration 1:1 or is it closer to 1:9 (the ratio of the original 4 quarts rye to the 36 quarts castings/straw)?

i guess that straw is fairly low in nutrients but since castings are a lot higher (right???) this might change things with the 1:10 ratio...

well whatever im sure itll work in the end.

indeed. I usually go for ~1pint of spawn for each ~5lbs of pasteurised straw.
A pretty low ratio, but it still works well, if a bit more slowly.

rebel what i was trying to say is (even though I see you can use much less) that you use the 4 quarts to spawn the worm castings and when that's colonized you spawn the straw with the castings. But if you were to go straight to the straw from grain use 7 quarts rye. Sorry for the confusion... but I see now you can use much less people I know just like to use more more more...

Hmmm, my friend uses 1 pint jar  per pillow case full of straw with 2 cups of zoodoo mixed in and pasturized. Sorry for not puting into a ratio, but hope this can help.:)bluhoney

if someone were to spawn using some older jars of colonized grain that did have this yellow look (maybe even primordia starting) or metabolite juices dripping on them, would you suggest spraying off the grain before using ... or not using it at all?? thanks for all the replies everyone, this is a good thread!

Thats a tough one. Wheat straw will produce bulk, but with an adequit(sp) casing, you will get more very fruitful flushes. I have to say both will give you excellent results.:)bluhoney
