OMC Acronyms and Abbreviations 4

I've put together a list of acronyms and abbreviations in use here. I started this when I got stumped by a somewhat common acronym. When I tried searching to find it I couldn't find anything but the same acronym with no explanation.
I finally figured it out myself, but while searching I came across another thread with someone searching for a list like this, so I decided to create one.
I thought I would post this here for comments, corrections, and suggestions. I think it's fairly complete, but I wanted to get advanced's suggestions and comments before I submit it as a FAQ contribution.

See. This is why I knew it needed to get approved by advanced before moving on to being a FAQ submission.
I don't think that anything's really set in stone, so we need to hammer out how we want abvs used in the future so that everyone is on the same page from here on out.
Hmm... Well looks like that one just got mixed up, easy fix. Thanks for catching that Anno.

>we need to hammer out how we want abvs used in the future so that everyone is on >the same page from here on out.
As little as possible.
IMO using abbrevations for any mushroom species is unnecessary and confusing, see
Quote:
cyans = Psilocybe cyanescens (a woodlover, often confused with pans) pans = Panaeolus cyanescens (a dung lover, often confused with cyans) subbs = Psilocybe subbalteatus (often confused with subs) subs = Psilocybe subaeruginosa (often confused with subbs)
also mex, which stands for Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe cubensis "Mexican"
Using the proper names eliminates the confusion and should be the way to go.

> Using the proper names eliminates the confusion and should be the way to go.
For sure. I'm not trying to encourage the use of abvs. I'm just trying to help people decipher them.
Pans often get called pan cyans, then somebody calls them cyans, resulting in much confusion. But if you look up the abv. you will realize that there is a confusion and that might help you figure out the meaning. If you didn't know that there was two cyanescens and some confusion about the abbreviations then you might not figure out what the meaning was.
I wasn't going to do any species abbreviations, but someone suggested it and posted a list, so I added it.
Thanks for the input. Anyone else want to chime in on that?

what about some of the cube strain name abbreviations, like OI = orissa india, PE = penis envy, GT = golden teacher, EQ, PR, TEX, KSSS... etc... if theres a good list of common strains somewhere (even perusing vendor sites would work) those could be nailed down quick and easy.
they're easy enough to figure out but could be bewildering to a newcomer.

True, but there already is a list I think. I know there's one at FSR, and I think there's one here too.
I don't know if I really like the idea of people using abbreviations for all the many strains. It sounds like confusion to me. OTOH people are using them anyway and it would be good to have a reference and properly nail them down.
Sounds like a project for some other day when I have more spare time on my hands. If you want to go for it I think it would be a worthwhile task.

Panaeolus subbalteatus?

that is the fruit of some old school pedantics. i remember getting into some pretty heated discussion about the reasonings behind what should and should not be used (i favored a TLA approach). for a while there it was stickied in the marketplace. nice to know it has been immortalized in our venerable FAQ.
edit: offical noob rank question: what is the KC strain? and why?

Pan or Pans is often used to name any species of the genus panaeolus. In the hunting forum you will often see "Those are inactive pans." Meaning a non-psychoactive species of the genus Panaeolus.

Well you'll have to stop using it that way because "pans" is now the official abbreviation for Panaeolus cyanescens.
Ha! JK, I'm sure you can use context to determine what's being talked about.
