7 weeks into incubation and...

ok its been a little over 7 weeks since inoculation. Most of my jars are near fully covered in mycelium. but almost half of my jars developed a gold/black ridge like growth near the top of the jars, they have been upside down for about 3 weeks. The growth was quite shocking too me so its very noticable. The ridges are all an inch or two long. The bases of the

I've seen gold/black ridges like you are describing in contamed jars that i've had. Is there a foul/sweet smell coming from the jars?

bacteria.  toss 'em, there's no hope. :frown:

1. shouldnt have taken that long
2. those "ridges" form when the mycelium can't go any further because the remaining substrate is infected with bacteria
3. foul smell is a dead giveaway

birth 'em.  pins will not always form in vitro (in the jar).  i know pf-tek for simple minds for example (and others) tells you to wait for pins, but IMO that's just bad advice... it takes a very long time and sometimes just flat out doesn't happen depending on the strain.  really wish somebody would change that, first we yell at people for not reading and following directions, then they wonder whats wrong when they do follow directions.

if your other cakes look healthy, and there's no smell, dunk them, and get them into an FC.  the added moisture and introduction of fresh air will hopefully start producing pins for you.

yup.  might want to skim over some of the dunk teks for some ideas.

easiest way to do it is simply scrape out your dry verm layer, and fill the jar they're in with water.  they'll float when you do that, so put the lid back on to force it back down and keep it submerged.  i prefer to use a fresh set of lids, that don't have holes on them for this purpose.

you can dunk them in any container, tupperwares, etc, i suppose a ziplock will even work but a bag full of water can be a pain in the ass to handle.
