Who Here Works Out, Why?
    #5874862 - 07/18/06 07:37 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

  • Do you work out?
  • What does your routine consist of?
  • Why do you do it?
  • What do you need to impove on?

I work out almost all week.  I mostly do weight lifting...everything.  Squat, various curls, bench, shoulder/military press, leg work, all that shit.

The number one reason I do it because I take pride in my health.  I also work out because I like to challenge myself, and it's an easy way to accomplish this.  And I must admit, I like to fight every now and then.  Whether I put on gloves and throw hands, or just get amongst it in a bar, I love it.

I try to eat healthy, but sometimes that doesn't work out.  This is one of the things I should improve on.  Should also do more cardio, but what the hell.  I have a bad heart and I'll be dead soon anyhow

I use to be in shape before, I went from 150 lean and in shape to 225, im like on the border of chubby, but I still look suprizingly not too bad, now that you mention this I think im going to try to get back into the routine of working out again, so with that said thanks for the post, I use to take pride in my health also, time to get back into that pride.

Find a friend that'll work out with you. That sort of peer pressure of keeping up/exceeding the other works wonders on motivation.

I have a physically demanding job.

I work out five days a week and I cool down by doing 14-24 reps of 12oz. bottles.

Yeah I work out. I feel good after working out and like to be a bit muscular. It does help a bit with self confidence. I do ~60 inclined push ups (with feet on the bed), harder than normal push ups. ~35 diamonds (push up with thumbs and index fingers touching each other). Then about 200 crunches. I used to go to the gym, but it's hard to keep up.
I miss the pull-up bar, that's a good exercises.
Also started to do some jogging, 3.5km. But with this heat wave I don't anymore.

I used to weight train, but then I found drugs, and they kinda ended it. I used to bench so often, that once in 2 weeks, I put 20 pounds onto my max.

Pull-ups/chin-ups and squats are probably my favorites.  They work so much.

Heat has made it something of a bitch the last few weeks, but luckily my  weight room is cooled

That's what keeps me motivated. I am currently adding 10-20 pounds every two weeks on my bench. Success is the best motivator. Now, if only I could add that much onto all my exercises..or at least my shoulder press.

Do you do squats with weights? I don't have weights at home anymore so I like to find exercises I can do without weight.

No lie, its feels so good to improve, especially withing a short time. Adding that extra 10 pounds on got that testosterone pumping for me.

Wasn't good for my personality, but I'll be damned if my confidence didn't prosper. Then I did nothing but smoke pot for a good 4 months, and I became a friendly fat man.

Yea, I use weight. If you're just starting, there's nothing wrong with using no resistance. You may want to use a broomstick or something just to get the feel for what it's like though.

It's not hard at all to come up with something makeshift if you want. Get a broomstick and hang some milk jugs full of water off of each end. Shit like that.

Or, you can look in the local paper's classifieds and almost always find someone selling a full olympic set for cheap. There's also those weight belts that aren't to expensive.

Hell, if you wanna go all out ghetto(nothing wrong with that), get a friend to sit on your shoulders and squat that motherfucker.

I ran x-country in high school. I still run extremely long distance because I am addicted to this natural high. I run until my heart is screaming, and so winded that your about to collapse, and the all to comon tunnel-vision. Its sounds horrible but during this time its better then an orgasm and you can keep this incredible high going as long as you want by just pushing yourself farther. I never time myself or see how far I run, but in highschool the farthest I went in one practice was 11.5miles away from school, the coach had to come pick me up cuz I passed out in the grass and couldn't move after for a couple hours after it.

I don't get to the gym as much as I'd like, but I usually hit each muscle group once a week. I split it into two days: shoulder/tris/chest/abs and biceps/back. I just run for legs. It's usually about like this:

DAY 1:
3 sets bench - 10 rep (warm up), 10 reps (moderate), 6 reps (heavy)
2-3 sets dumbell bench - 8 to 10 reps (moderately heavy)
3 sets tricep pulldown
3 sets standing shoulder lifts
2 sets machine shoulder lift
2 sets situps (I hate situps)

DAY 2:
3-4 sets bicep curl
3 sets lat pulldown
2 sets hyperextension (lower back)
2 sets bent rows

I do it cause I like having strength to do things that other people can't do. It's good to be useful. It also keeps me trim(mer) than I'd be without lifting.

As far as improvements, I'd LIKE to get my bench back up to over 275, where it was in college. And loose this gut.

I always feel that for bench I should be able to do 150% of my body weight.  Been slacking, so I'm not quite there yet :frown:

I workout. I used to be depressed but the shape I'm in right now really helps my self-confidence. If it weren't for working out and playing my drums, I would be a total wreck.

As for my workout, menshealth.com has a great personal trainer program. Costs a couple of bucks, but the results are worth it. personal trainer

• Yes, I work out.
• I lift 10 reps of 30lbs. I do 4 sets(per arm). 3x a week, working on biceps.
• The rest of my body looks very muscular, my upper body needs a LOT of work.
• My legs are fine(leg press around 1100lbs). I need to improve my arms and upper body in general.

I'm working on improving the size of my arms and pecs.

went from 140 (before)

to being 185 (after)

In 1 1/2 years of working out and eating protein. I only work out 30-45 minuts a day....1 day pushups incline/decline off the bed.
2 day curls 25 pound dumbells and then i downgrade as it gets to the harder reps.
3 day deltoids with pushing dumbells over the head.....it all works out great.

I am a shitty swimmer, and I dont have the money for serious fun exercise. I live where there is no surfing.
But skiing...hiking, snowshoeing..is where it is at in Utah.
I might just be able to afford to hike and camp nowdays anyway.

My new year's resolution is to get down to around 140lbs. When I started, my weight was 175lbs. I am now down to 159lbs. I've been stuck around 163lbs for the longest time. All I do is run and changed my diet. I run 6 miles x 5/wk. Especially in this heat, I dropping pounds like crazy. I lost 7 pounds last week.

i've been meaning to start working out for so long. i've fairly thin and toned looking without working out, but i'd like to be more cut and stronger.

i just lack having someone to go with me. i feel awkward working out alone plus i'm not very educated in weight training (though i took the class, and passed it....haha)

I work nights at a large home improvment warehouse stocking BBQs, mowers, pallets of nails, ect. Not to mention unloading the trucks and pulling pallets around a huge store. I put on 20 pounds of muscle the first two months after I started. I'm in the best shape of my life right now. I can't stand "working out," because after your done, you've still done nothing.

I do three sets of fifty push ups a day now, and run a mile every morning to get woken up a bit(after the moring doob).  Used to do more but I go to gym for an hour or so two or three times a week.  But this works fine for me.  Very satisfied with where I am at these days.  Jobs usually demanding (esp. as of late), and I can't eat a thing in this heat so I'm smoking tons of pot to forcefeed myself this summer- only to keep an even keel on my weight cause I metabolize everything quickly.  Guess I do it because I like the difference in attention I get now, and that does have a real effect on your overall confidence.  Helps with the ladies. :bongload:

Push/Pull/Legs is probably the most popular three day split there is. Those are terms i hear most. I used to do it went i only had time three days a week to commit myself to lifting. I prefer to do a 5 day split because recovery tends to be better that way for me.

I do it just to be healthy and look better. I need to improve my willpower because if i ever stop going for whatever it takes away for me to get back into routine. I really need to go today, its been a while since I've been when i injured myself.

I work out at the gym for an hour a day, 5 days a week. Half of that time is spent on the treadmill. As for why I do it, it's mainly to look good and keep the weight off. It also helps compensate somewhat for unhealthy eating habits.

i used to be a big workout freak from 13 or 14 till i turned 21. now i just don't care...i don't see the point in working out anymore. i don't feel better, i still drink and smoke so i was never in cardio shape...i just had big muscles.

now i'm cool with taking a break and maybe getting into light body weight resistance type workouts instead of the heavy lifting i used to do. i'd hate to see my abs go, so i think i'll get into situps pretty soon again.

i find that hard to believe...if you are fueling your workout with garbage food, you'll get a garbage workout. you can only get out what you put into your body. a diet of snicker bars and hardcore running/lifting isn't going to compensate imo, but then again i'm no nutritionist.

Well, my diet isn't that unhealthy, but it does consist of a few more calories and fat than I should be eating.

I have a horrible ability to remember to workout, I'm pretty lazy and forgetful about it.

But, when I do manage to get around to it, I have a daily routine.
~various stretching
~push-ups (I try for at least 20, but do as many as I comfortably can). --sidenote: for some reason I have a pretty hard time doing pushups. Either I'm doing something wrong, or my strength in those muscles is too low and needs to be built up with some other excercise before push-ups become more practical--
~curl freeweights (all I have are 12lb, so I just do as many reps as I can)
~sit-ups (again, at least 20, but as many as I can)

Occasionally I've also done jumping jacks so that there's some aerobic excercise amidst all the anerobic.

Mostly, I just do it to build and/or maintain muscle tone. It's an image thing, I have a lot less sex appeal in my normal state without excercise than I do if I put time into working out. I like the knowledge that there's a health benefit too, and I appreciate the increased physical ability, but really the motivator is my appearance.

There are two things I need to improve. The critically important one is that I need to keep it up and stop neglecting to do the workout regularly. The second is that my routine is a really limited workout, I should expand it for a more balanced and complete workout.

I get some kind of exercise 5 or so days out of the week, whether it's running, biking, lifting, or boxing. I'm not on a consistent schedule though. A group of us have a boxing set up in a barn which consists of a speed bag, heavy bag, mitts, jump rope. We have our bench and other weights set up in the barn as well. If I'm ambitious I run or bike, lift, and box in the same day. I'm not on any routine. Regardless, I'm seeing results.

As to why I do it... I like to stay in shape. Not just physically.. exercise is great stress therapy.

I just started working out about 2 weeks ago to lose weight. I'm too fat and my mom who is also fat has type 2 diabetes and it's freaking me out. I don't want to get that shit!
So I'm doing 40 minutes of cardio 5 days a week, first 35 minutes on the elliptical at a high resistance, and then 5 on the rowing machine just for variety and it seems more hardcore than the elliptical.
I'm also cutting out most white sugar from my diet and measuring portions accurately, like with measuring cups and spoons. Whenever I feel hungry, I just eat some fruit or raw veggies instead of junk.
I want to lose 50 pounds, but mostly just change my lifestyle to be more healthy.

A lot of that is probably water weight. It's not healthy to lose weight fast, and it is not healthy to be dehydrated. Keep your eye on those things if you don't already.

No, they don't all pull.

Your pushing muscles are your pecs, your deltoids and your triceps.  Your pulling muscles are your back (latismiss dorsii et al) and biceps.  Totally different muscle groups.

I used to lift weights 2-3x a week, but I spend most of my time running now.  I run 2-4 miles twice a week, sometimes more if I can muster up the motivation.  I do it because I want to keep my heart strong and kick my ass back into shape.  I'm also trying to shed some body fat I've accumulated as a result of my lack of exercise.  I was a soccer player once so it just feels good to see my body working hard again... it makes me happy

The one thing I can tell you about getting in shape, forget those faggoty "Mens Health" magazines. If you want to look ripped, you add muscle (by doing a few sets of 8-10 reps of heavy weight, increasing each set) and you decrease fat (by cardio and proper diet). My first goal when I start training someone is to get them to leave behind that silly "I wanna do 50 reps and 'tone' my muscle" bullshit. Thats not how your body works. Pick up a copy of flex or start using the working available here
http://boards.flexonline.com/ib/ikonboard.cgi?s=d60bd2badbe9370e77b53d796389bb1e;act=ST;f=2;t=9648
http://boards.flexonline.com/ib/ikonboard.cgi?s=d60bd2badbe9370e77b53d796389bb1e;act=ST;f=2;t=9434

Both of those are push/pull type of workouts. Do about 4-6 sets of 8-10 reps with the weights increasing each time.

Also, I do a nightly burnout exercise. On the "push" day, I work my muscles good and hard, drink some protein immediately after the workout and then rest my arms the rest of the day, until just before bedtime, and I do three sets of max pushups. On my pull days, I do a few sets of pullups (mainly negatives with a friend helping, cause I can't do my old 15 pushups from the military anymore). Then, REST!

One Axiom that Schwarzenegger states, you don't go to the gym to build muscle, you go to the gym to tear it down. Thats really deep when you consider it. At the gym, you aren't adding to your muscle, you are putting it under stress and causing the muscle fibers to tear. What rebuilds the muscles? Proper protein (diet), sleep and resting those muscles. Thats why the push/pull/legs is so effective, you can really give your muscles 72 hours to rest between workouts so that they've really rebuilt themselves.

Also, some other things that people say that are wrong...

1) don't eat right before bedtime - BULLSHIT! At night, your body is resting, rebuilding itself. How can it do that without proper nutrition? My favorite before-bedtime drink is a protein shake with a bananna in it. Really helps out!

2) The aforementioned "high-reps, low weight 'tones' your muscles". Complete bullshit. Your muscle is built when it's exposed to conditions that it hasn't been exposed to beforehand. Your muscles look "toned" when two things happen. First, your muscles get bigger. This occurs from strength training. Second, your body fat percentage decreases. This occurs from diet and low intensity cardiovascular trianing.

3) "getting your heart rate up" equates burning fat - NOT NECESSIARILY! You should determine your proper THR (target heart rates) for both cardiovascular training and for fat burning. I forget what the percentages are, but I know that for me to burn fat, I keep my bpm at about 130, while for me to improve the conditions of my cardiovascular system, I keep my bpm's at about 160.

Feel free to ask anything, I'm a fitness guru.

I try and work out. I was going 3x a week for awhile then hurt my back, now its better enough so starting up again but going slow to not aggervate my back again.

Primary reason for working out? - Feel better, more energy, and strenghten my back (so it doesnt hurt me again). Weight loss/etc are just bonus but not my goal.

What do I do?

- 30 mins cardio followed by weights. Do becnh press, lat pulldown, seated row, squats, etc.

Also do situps and then a few things that my Chiro showed me to do to target my back.

But my main concern is getting my stomach and upper/lower back into shape again. I'm sick of my back always being sore.

Well, it really depends on how long it takes before you ahve recovered. I like my schedule, it works pretty good and gives good recovery time. As I said, working out doesn't build muscle, it tears it down. Protein intake and rest builds muscle.

lol. No I am not a girl. 140lb was my weight in high school when I was in judo. That was my tournament weight. I'm not interested in muscle. I rather have a swimmer's body and be strong but flexible than be a beefcake.

You're right about losing weight too fast. I read you should lose 2 pounds a week. But since I'm overweight, it doesn't really affect me much.

The reason I'm dropping pounds so fast besides running in this heat is that I really don't eat. So I basically running on an empty stomach. I know it's not healthy but I'm not really hungry cause I'm overweight. When I get hungry I wait an hour, and after an hour I'm not hungry and wonder if eating is just my mentality telling me to eat just because it's lunch/dinner time.

You MUST eat protein, this is non-negotiable.

You can get your energy from bodyfat, but you need protein and micro-nutrients.

Yup, diets that encourage "cutting out" any part of a complete nutrition plan are foolish.  Like that atkins crap, total bunk.  "it made me lose weight!" Yea, well, so would smoking crack, but it's not the healthiest way.

For those that take in a decent amount of protein, you might want to consider taking a fiber supplement as well, so it doesn't feel like you are crapping out a steel tube
