to tape or not to tape
    #587358 - 03/23/02 01:39 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I am a newbie to this shroom growing thing. And I was wondering a few things that some of you might be able to help with. I innoculated 12 1/2 pint jars 4 weeks and 2 days ago avg temp 70 to 75 degrees. And another 12 with mazateca 4 days ago. I used the PF Tek techniqe with vermeculite and BRF. My questions are this:

1. It seems like the initial batch is taking a long time (only 3 are close to full coverage) is this good or bad? Any tips for the future?
2. I think mine are bruised, does this affect fruit growth?
3. I taped the tops of the Jars after I sterilized them for the duration of growth. I have read conflicting reports of the necessity to tape or not to tape. What do you guys think about taping the tops of the Jars?

Maybe your temperature is a little low? I think I read 80-85 for incubation is ideal. So that may be why it's taking longer to colonize.

Bruising? I don't know. Maybe. I've bruised my cakes quite a bit unfortunately. I hope not.

I taped the top of my jars until about 3/4 complete growth. Then I inverted the jars and removed the tape to drain the CO2 and allow growth to continue.

You should tape before you steralize so that it steralizes the tape. If you'll fold the very end of the peice of tape, it will be easy to lift it, just past the hole, for innoculation and then rub it back down as you move to the next hole. After they're 40% done, pull off the tape and flip em. Hope that helps.:peace:

I have never taped and haven't had any problems. I'm wondering, if not taping my holes was causing a problem, it would be in the way of contaminants, correct??

Sorry, but I don't really don't understand your post. How could not taping be causing you problems, if you're not having any problems? If you're not taping and not having contams, that's great. I've taped because the PF Tek and MMGG both said to. Yes, initally it should help hold out contams until the mycelia has a good grip on the substrate. Then it's removed to provide air exchange and a quick finish. I wouldn't tell anyone to change their method if it's working for em. But that is a little more risk. Sounds like you diid a good job steralizing everything else.:peace:

Here's what I meant. I'm not having any contams, at least not often, and I was wondering if taping the holes was done for the purpose of keeping out contams, or for another reason. Basically I was wondering if I should be taping my holes, but since I know it's to keep out contams, and I don't have any, then it's not causing a problem. Thanks, u answered my question, sorry it was so confusing!!!!
