WBS Flour?
    #5873401 - 07/18/06 01:23 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

So my WBS jars are PC'ing right now and during the waiting time I had a thought of what I could do with my left over grain. I was theorizing about how WBS grinded into flour would work. Has anyone ever tried this? My thoughts tell me that pherhaps in a flour form the nutrients would be more easily extracted by the mycellium. As well as giving the mycellium an easier medium to colonize. I'm thinking of using my left over grain and filling a few pint jars with a mix of WBS Flour and whole WBS Grains. The flour for more available nutes. and the whole grains for support. Anyone tried this before? Anyone have any ideas on ways to tweak the best results out of a such an experiment.

Now to the flip side. I'm also thinking on the other end of the spectrum. The negative affects might be such as, high water content? More easily contaminated mediums. Anyone else have any idea's on the subject?

Basically heres the procedure I've planned to follow:

To avoid high water content in the flour, follow traditional soaking methods or a boiling method such as Foomans Tek. Once the desired H2O content is reached, then grind the vast majority of grains into flour.

And from there simply treat the substrate as you would a normal WBS jar. Or would it be a better idea to treat it as a typical BRF Jar? It would be more like a BRF Jar in terms of consistency but definatly not chemically.

Any ideas, comments, criticizim ?

why not just grind it into flour and follow a PF style tek. Or maybe do a mixture of WBS flour and whole WBS? it would take some experimenting to get it right i would think.

i think this might work... id deffinatly soak first and then grind the wbs, i dont see why it wouldnt work, you should be able to get the moisture content just about perfect doing it this way.

you should probably start on this now... im pretty interested in seeing your results from this.

if you soak it first then try to grind it you are going to end up with a nasty mush.

people already do use wbs flour in pf style cakes.

as for mixing it with regular wbs, i see little benefit, and only problems trying to get moisture content right.  wbs works awesome as it is without any extra stpes.  not seeing the point here?

soaking it then grinding it?  nice idea but you're not going to end up with flour, you're going to end up with wbs mush.

Yeah I definatly see the point you guys are making with the WBS slurry I'd end up with if I soaked b4 grinding. I guess as far as moisture content you would treat it like creamcorn said, as a normal PF Cake, with a PF cake you have grinded rice flour which is soaked post-grinding so why would it be any different for WBS? It wouldnt. Now after thinking about it I almost dont see the point but I'll try it anyway.

I've never done it before and I'd be curious to see how they compair normal PF Cakes. As well as PF Cakes cased. So I'm going to start this tomorrow I'll post pictures as time goes on. I'll keep 2 in Cake form and I'll case 2 of the same cakes.

Shouldnt be long, My LC are looking great after 2 days. Just a footnote, how long should I wait before using my LC as innoculant?

I think it would be an entertaining little experiment just for shits and giggles.  after I have a bunch of spare prints i may give it a shot just for fun.

i think if you mixed the WBS slurry with some verm you would be alright, its pretty much the same concept as using BRF. all you would really need to do is coat the verm with WBS and it should work just fine, i wonder how this would effect potency.

I see a bunch of posts of people doing the same thing I am. Asking questions about it, but I dont see a post showing results of something like that. Why not try it? Why should everyone be quiet, if theres people that are interested we should be talking about it, not trying to get people the not talk about it.

Were all striving for more knowledge about our hobby, arent we?

haha i didn't mean it like that, good to see the gears churning in some peoples' heads at least...

there's lots of info in those threads though with mixed reports as to results.  you may find it works for you, you may not... but its always helpful to take a look at what others have done rather than re-invent things from scratch.  i personally wouldn't bother with such a thing, but to each their own!

I couldnt agree with you more, I wasnt directing it towards anyone I just felt that vibe coming from some of the posts. I'm all about research and reading. At this point there isnt much "brand new" methods and ideas that we can think up so just like you said we have to go back to what people have previously done, research it, and perfect it.

a lot of times the new ideas are inspired by playing with and tweaking with the old ideas... so get on with your bad wbs flour self.
