The Doors

I haven't gotten into The Doors much at all in my life. I know the popular songs played on the radio and have seen the movie. I just started hanging out with one of my old friends this summer after a few years not seeing him. He's a huge Doors fan and I've found him to be a very like minded person.
Anyways, he always has a Doors cd in at one point in the night, but I don't get to really listen to it because we're talking/hanging out/whatever.
So the point of this post is...which albums should I get to get started into The Doors? I'm going to ask him about it, but until then, I pose the question to all of you.

The Best of The Doors is a worthy CD for someone interested in hearing the more popular songs.

An American Prayer?
As a first Doors album?
Thats a bit much. Thats not even a Doors album, is it? Just spoken word poetry?

I started with The Very Best of the Doors. Their self-titled album is all good too.
Check out this video, it helps to have seen them perform when listening to the music.

I think if you buy The Very Best of The Doors nowadays, the CD comes encoded with "The Ghost Song" video.
I bought it for my little brother last year, (At 8, He's just starting to get into music, and I'm trying to set him up right) and it had the video on there when you popped the CD into your computer...
Check it out!

This is what I'm looking to get into. His poerty. I've heard their popular songs, and have plenty of other bands that played songs.
I want something different. Thanks everyone.

I love the Doors so much I didn't bother fucking around with just this cd or that cd. I got the whole box set and am very happy with it indeed!

I think American Prayer is a bunch of poems that Morrison recorded, with the other three members playing music in the background recorded years later. I would recommend getting a real album, like Waiting for the Sun or Strange Days. I believe most of the words on those were written by Morrison.

Exactly correct, except for all words were by Morrison.

Jim Morrison sounds like a drunken rapist.
That being said the Doors rock.
