Not bad for a pound of mushrooms. That's a lot of black trumpets. Good deal, you made the cooks happy.
>Gumby, what Corporal Kielbasa said, look for moss under oaks on a hillside, better luck if its right below a spot that is flat with moss and oaks and then drops off with moss and oaks. You need like more than an inch of rain in the week before you look to have any chance of finding any. Trumpets like it really humid, most of the boletes you find near them will have been attacked by hypomyces.

I found them along the shore of lake george, underneath pine trees growing on moss in a rather wind-riddled section of land...

Are you sure they were trumpets? There is a closely related species that is just is good that grows under pine, look very much like them, and are just as good, I can't remember the species name, I haven't found them yet.
editLooked in Mushrooms Demystified, it is found under conifers, C. Cornucpioides is anyway, the look alike I was thinking of was Polyozellus multiplex.
I will keep my eyes out under pine. What time of year did you find them? What was the weather like?

the area I found them at was on the east side of a large lake which has little vegetation other than the tall pine trees because there are always high winds.

state park land too... as soon as you get 150 yds away from shore the ground is thick with duff and rotting wood... The ranger there saw me looking at the mushrooms and talked to me for a bit... He was a really cool guy.
