Saved a baby rabbit from the cats - but now it died
    #5871589 - 07/17/06 11:17 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I heard a squeak outside my window so I went outside to investigate. Two of the neighborhood cats were across the street chasing a little rabbit around on the lawn. It ran out on the street towards my house so I went out and scared the cats off, grabbed the rabbit, and brought it inside.

It seems uninjured, just a little fur missing. I've got it in a cage right now with a dish of water and it looks like it's going to sleep. What can I feed it? Would cat chow softened with water be OK until I can get to the pet store?

Try feeding it some lettuce and carrots. Cute little guy. Kudos to you for intervening.

Sometimes when I'm out back I'll hear a cat screeching like it's being hurt... it just makes a guy's heart sink in his chest. Don't know if it's stupid humans or raccoons.

I'd go with something simple. Perhaps a light breading and a cream sauce?

Just kidding. =)

Good job on the rescue. And yeah, they adore lettice and carrots and such. If you don't want to keep it, I'd put a flyer up at the local convenience stores, supermarkets, etc. Don't forget to include details on how you came to own it. People love a good back story. Especially when it involves being saved from the jaws of death.

I believe carrots give baby rabbits the runs. Just feed it some greens until tomorrow. If your keeping it, bring it to the vet for a check up and get the right info on nutrition and such.

No prissy cat I've ever known is going to catch a rabbit with the runs, though.

At that point you start calling it an Octopus.

I used to have several pet rabbits. Lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, egg plant slices, etc was what I normally fed them. Once in awhile I'd give them fruit to balance out their diets a bit, but they tend to like vegetables more.

You have it calmed, then?

My fucking cats get all excited and hunt down chipmunks, baby bunnies--it's in their nature.  I could tolerate it but they're not hungry--it's just instinct.  So they toss the fuckers around and generally use said animal as a plaything.  Also, they're de-clawed on the front paws.

Keep kitties inside, let it out, and smell its way back to its hole.  Or, you could keep it as a pet.  I would like to raise a raccoon or possum.   You can domesticate them, and they're just fascinating.

Best of luck!

ya rabbits shouldnt be confined to small areas. if you have a goo backyard that is fenced off well (assuming you want to keep it) then just let it run wild in ur backyard. Feed it a source of lettuce, rabbit food (can be bought at pet stores) carrots, water and I think you can buy supplement milk from pet stores as ell. If you dont intend on keeping it, either take it out to the wild and release it as they are good at intergrating and are pretty independant animals, even at tender ages... it will find its way home.

But yeah, you interviened on nature, good and bad job I suppose, but I would have done the same thing (I have such a soft spot for animals)

go to a vet and ask him what you should do, but rabbits are a plague here in Aus so people just run over them or shovel them to the head :frown: so cruel

lettuce and carrots until you can get to the pet shop to buy him some timothy hay pellets.

he's probably in shock too. so make sure you keep him somewhere where he feels safe and make sure he has plenty of water.

the bunny looks old enough to have been weened already. if that is the case, he's pretty much on his own. although his family is probably nearby. rabbits are very social animals, and normally live in groups.

Trendal, you should keep him safe for a couple days then let him go in a bush near where you found him. he'll find his way to his family and should be fine.

Feed it timothy hay and any basic rabbit food from a pet store. The timothy hay is much more important, they need a constant source of fiber (they may die if their digestion is obstructed, they cannot vomit). Don't give it milk or anything like that, anything but rabbit milk is dangerous. I'm sure there are some animal rescues nearby that would rehabilitate and release him into the wild, Canada, NE & West coast US are where a lot of rabbit specific rescue shelters are ran. Good luck Trendal, thanks for saving him

I have no intention of keeping the poor thing caged up any longer than I have to. Last night it was a choice between a cage or the cats...I live in the city so I don't have anywhere outside I could keep the thing safe. I also have my own house-cat to worry about...

I'm going with slothie's advice: keep it for a day or two until it's not in shock anymore, then let it go in the bushes.

Just got home from work! He ate all the lettuce I gave him this morning, so I suppose that's a good thing eh?

A couple more pics:

Time of death: 9:15pm EST.

:frown:

Looks like he had some internal injuries or something. drtyfrnk and I just got back from the pet shop with a bag of food for him, but it was too late and he was already getting ready to die.

We just named him Smokey the Rabbit (cause you got to have a name if you're gonna be buried).

RIP Smokey, 2006-2006

We're gonna go bury him and smoke a few bowls in his honour.

nothing you could have done.
you did what you could and made him as comfortable as possible. better than being eaten by cats. hopefully he didn't suffer too much. RIP Smokey. he is in a better place.

Sorry man. But rabbits have a lot of things that can kill them. Heat (if they can't find shade), bacteria (their guts are REALLY picky about what they eat), dehydration, shock, etc. Atleast you tried.
