Can old spores expire?

Hi now that I am getting back into the myco fun I started two 4 honey jars and 4 WBS jars with my old spore print and after a week I see nothing and thats fine I know they take a while to rehydrate but honey jars are usually pretty quick. And that got me wondering if spores can expire over time? The print is 4+ years old and has been kept at room temp. I would like to bring this one back if possible... I guess only time will tell for sure

Spores are prepackaged by nature to withstand just about anything. They should be fine if kept in a safe place. They might have been out of commission for a while but you should definitely still have some viable spores.

what strain are they? i just last week germinated some 2 year old Philippine cubes from a print i had kept in a very informative cultivation book.
fingers crossed for you.

RR gave me some advice for germinating old spores. He suggested that you use about 75% normal concentration of sugars in your media. He also suggested using a "soft" agar concentration.
He said that old spores tear like paper, so cool your loop on agar and then use the agar coated loop to get some of the spores off the print.
Good luck. I don't think 4 years is all that old though. You should have no problem.

older spores have been germinated, so yours will be ok, just might take a lil time. its the equivilent of sleeping for 4 years then being expected to run a marithon against bateria and mold spores lol.

After two years, less than one out of a thousand spores will germinate, and it gets worse from there. You can up your chances by using more spores, but that also means more chances for contaminants to hitch a ride on the mushroom spores as well. Good luck. RR
