or people who run small businesses. I was wondering if you give me some advise on what kind of software is best for bookkeeping and organizing. Things of that nature.
Starting Monday, we're taking over a small business here in town. The woman who runs it now does everything with paper. She doesn't even have a computer. I need something that will keep track of inventory, labor and maintenance.
Well, I'm not a paper girl. I want to use a computer to take care of business. Any good software out there that you guys could suggest?

Quickbooks is the best program. We use it here, and we are a small IT Firm, and service small/medium sized businesses in town and I must say quickbooks is used everywhere, also accountants can look at ac opy of your quickbooks and process all your tax info etc. If you have a lot of contact people etc i suggest looking into ACT as well.

I took their little quiz or whatever and looks like Quickbooks pro might be perfect for us.
Thanks again.

The Quickbooks program is $200. Is it around the same price range?

i recently stumbled upon gnucash the other day. looks like a decent program.
i guess that i am just so used to working with quickbooks which makes me apprehensive to try something totally new(to me).
maybe i will give it a download and play abit.
do you use gnucash at all?

I have successfully tracked a married couple's finances including individually owned small businesses for 4+ years. GnuCash has matured a great deal. Some very interesting patterns emerge when you track discrete expense and income by category. It has really helped us shape our business and personal financial strategies.
I'd say that any mature software is a go (Quickbooks, M$Money) but if the idea is to conserve money, then it is hard to beat free. IMO, paying for software is simply buying the right to demand to be supported/heard by the vendor responsible for development.
Keep an eye out for a windows port.

I use custom coded excel documents. I reccomend the same, you get just what you need and it's free!

thats all well and good for computer savy people, GNUCASH and custom excel documents aren't for the non tech savvy business owners. Quickbooks has a great deal of support from both the company and local IT support, also accountants are very familiar with it. It might be worth the money in the long run.
