Alight, never noticed this before now.
Every time a page loads, I get the usual, Transferring data from shroomery.org. Then after the page is loaded, I get another one: Reading data google-analytics.com, then Transferring from google-analytics.com.
What the fuck is that all about?

http://www.google.com/analytics/
read the first paragraph carfully...the way i read it basicly it harvests all kinds of information....back in the day the gov had a program they spent millions on called carnivore.....used to spy basicly they eventually gave up on it for "programs" that were developed for marketing
this could "EASILY" be used for data mining.
all someone has to do is type in a keyword like "pot" and boom there's everyone who typed that in the last hour...oh he said he's picking up a bag ok ok...oh his ip says he's in
bumbfuck,MI
oh his ip provider says he lives at 22 hundred your fucked rd.
yea he drives a green van with pink fuzzy carpet...lets follow
EDIT: oh and don't forget the public only hears HALF the uses and capabilitys of things like this.

At the moment we have tracking links for Analytics (description, privacy policy) and BigBoards (description). In the course of writing this post I found that BigBoards doesn't have a stated privacy policy. We already use a server-side stats tracking package (AWStats) but Analytics and BigBoards track additional metrics and allow us to generate more detailed reports without impacting the performance of our server. The tracking links are already disabled for supporters using SSL, but if people are concerned about their information being collected by third parties for aggregate statistical purposes we could probably drop them.

purhaps its time for another poll? but i guess it really doesn't matter, if it is being used in some way to easedrop which im sure it is since just about everything these days have something of the sorts in it...its just a small part of the puzzle and won't really matter.
just about every video game on the market calls out to the internet now....even the single player ones sometimes.
they all call the internet a "public" place now and everything as an excuss to invade our privacy.....but in REAL Public you'd be in some trouble for following me around my shopping mall, getting in my car with me, watching me look at porno you sick fucks!
dave chappelle did a "decent" job of showing this in one of his skits.

I see no issue, become a supporter or just point the URLs to loopback or 0.0.0.0
I can't even visit big-boards to see the policy because it's already dead in my host file (so the fact I'm a supporter bears no difference)

Will you post all the computer stuff we need to do then?
Write a FAQ on it, list all the IP's involved, maybe create a script, then put up a site wide sticky about it?
Anything that impacts privacy should have a opt-out option that every user sees at least once. I had no idea that all this tracking was going on!
Super fancy analysis of server usage seems like kind of a small benifit compared to the risk of all the tracking by third parties that you have no control over presents.
I trust the shroomery to be as discrete as possible, but I'm not sure I want all my info going out to, and being stored by, mega-corporations like google.

Okay, the Google Analytics and Bigboards tracking links have been removed from the Shroomery. Although these particular sites are really nothing to worry about, I can understand why people would be wary of us utilizing a third party to collect statistics. However, you shouldn't let this give you a false sense of security. Anyone can post an image which, when viewed, will log your IP to their server. The solution is to use a proxy, disable images altogether, or become a supporter and use the 'coral cache' or 'disable offsite image' options.
Peace,
