Horse poo.........times.......

In general, how long does it take for peoples horse poo to fully colonize?
Currently, AFOAF was Golden Teacher spawn in some poo. It has been six days and the tray is only 50% done......this is moving much slower then previous bulk grows.......
Anyone ever have long colonizing times here?

And instead of making a new thread, I'll post my question as well.
Everytime I incubate my spawned poo, I end up with mold/infections. I've left my last casings outside of the incubator in 73-76 degrees, and I haven't seen any growth in 7 days.
Any ideas?

Factors vary widely. It primarily depends on strain characteristics, spawn rates, h/poo consistency, substrate size/depth, moisture level, and incubation temperatures, amongst others. With all those variables, there is no sure fire answer. Given, everyones circumstance differs.

If the spawn is clean? The problem lays in either the h/poo, or is introduced along with the spawn, or both.
Clean up your work area. Make sure the trays are sanitized. Use clean tools. Use the best aseptic technique you can manage. Wear a hair covering, and face mask. Be sure the h/poo is well pasteurized. Once spawn is added. Cover the container with aluminum foil, not tightly. Then, incubate it, and don't inspect it for at least several days.

I had the same problem, failed again and again, at first i blamed the poo, then the straw. i thought OK it might be the trays or the process, but finally i figured it out, it was ME !!!. all i did was not letting my WBS to get 100% colonized, every time they reached about 85-90 % colonized i spawned them, got all the worst things you can think of, mold in all the colors they come, bacteria with all the "wonderful" smells you can think of. And of course most of them did not fully colonize. just make it clean and be patient. Let them grow, don't open them every day. Good Luck.

i recently dealt with these problems.
1. if the poo is too wet it will colonize soooo slow. 2. i usually run 3-4 strains at a time, so i can watch them side by side and see with one i prefer. i notice that some strains/substrains just dont take to poo while others do, even if the spawn and the poo is the exact same batch. for the weak ones, ive tried upping the spawn ratio to encourage colonization.

I've seen my WBS -> hpoo colonization times range from five days to two weeks.

My pre-pasteurized hpoo from tennstud came a little damp, and my first tray took about 8 days to colonize, since then I squeeze it out a bit first... It takes longer to colonize wet poo, but in the end it has a lot more water content so you don't need to dunk/spray as much... But I like the fast colonizing in opposition to the water content just because the faster it fully colonizes, the better chance it has against contams.
Anyways, it sounds like you'll be fine. Just have patience.
Also, next time, try getting your spawn spread a little better... WBS tends to gravitate towards the bottom so opposed to mixing, I layer. Some hpoo, some wbs, some hpoo, some wbs, some hpoo.
I also spraypaint my casing trays, but I put a tape vertically on each side. I can peel the tape back, look at the colonization, then press it back on, and it works really well!
Anyways, have fun and try to learn as much about casings as I have in the past few months.
On a side note, my first 2 mini-casings are in the FC right now, and I've got 2 mini-doubletubs cased and in the incubator right now... wish me luck
