Habitat: In old forest, close to the mountains, growing on log.

Gills: Small, sponge like.

Stem: Black and woody.

Cap: Yellowish/Gold with brown dots throughout

Spore print color: Waiting.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in NW MD near Mountains.

Polyporus squamosus. Also refered to as the Dryads saddle or Pheasants Back mushroom.

Edible when young  :smile:

You probably needn't bother. The people I know who've tried them said they weren't worth the effort. They tend to be somewhat tough in texture and lacking in flavor.
If you still want to give them a try, they are a fairly safe edible.
