Its tough. Programming could land you with a good job, or a living hell. Networking is networking.

I used to work at a shitty retail outlet with a girl who had a 4year programming degree from GA Tech. She was our head cashier. She was a very smart person. He company was bought out and her job was sent overseas. Just thought I'd mention it.

Programming and networking are going to be hard. Anything is possible, but to be honest...this is not 10 years ago. Lots of companies are moving overseas where they have experienced people for alot less cost.
There is always going to be local work, but the number of qualified people has skyrocketed. Like the guy above said, alot of IT professionals these days are doing nothing IT related.
If you are a programmer, and have your heart set on it, id say go for it. If you dont currently code, and its not your passion...then I dont see the point. So many people do this stuff like it was their god given task as a hobby, who train themselves...I honestly cannot see someone getting into it whow as not already into it.
And yes, it does sound boring.
Hope I am not discouraging you, because like I said its possible, but only if you really want it. If you are looking for something "safe" to get into, and figured programming/networking was a secure field, then you are wrong.
There are definately better things to do with your time, depending all of course on what interests you.

OK heres what I'm thinking about doing right know... I'm going to get certified in electrical wiring which is only 18 credits...get into a apprenticeship program to hopefully land a descant job to help me pay for my degree in my UN-determined field...i can get certified in 2 semesters..you guys think this would be a good academic plan for an undetermined student...it gives me time to think about my career while still having a goal..

if you stay the IT route then the electrical wiring would help a ton. I currently work for a large corporation at their corporate offices. One of the guys I work with in the IT group spends a good portion of his time doing electrical work, because before he went IT he was an electrician.
Its a good skill to have, because they can't outsource it.

I've been a contract programmer/analyst/consultant for 11 years. Work has NEVER been as slow as it is now. My father gave me some advice years ago which I never took, but should have. He said to learn a trade, then continue your education in a (possibly) higher paying profession. You'll always have something to fall back on. Think of things which people will need which can't be outsourced. Becoming an electrician is not a bad gig, refrigeration is another good field to be knowledgeable in - people need to transport and store food cold... with global warming, it may be a better idea than ever.
Whatever you do, try to broaden your knowledge of related things as much as possible, it makes you more marketable. If you do programming, learn networking and operations, learn about mid-range and mainframe operating system and how to run them. Make yourself indispensable.

I am the lead analyst at a corp. data center. My education is an associated in network eng. I may be lucky that we deal with so many different aspects the our infrastructure that I can't imagine being bored. I have to say though that the direction I am wanting to go in now is ITSM. IT service management and ITIL is a growing area that companies are just starting to adopt. It is interesting figuring out how to implement the ITIL framework in an existing IT dept. But this work is about figuring out processes and work flow more than 1's and 0's. You might read up on that and see how you like it. But I think it is something that you almost have to have been in IT for a while to understand how to fit a real work IT dept into an idea framework and best practice processes.
