Will you walk around in a surgical mask to prevent you from accidentally swallowing and killing a gnat (and creating more bad karma)?

That is a maximization of ethical behaviour for the mind's benefit. I guess trying not to step on insects while walking is also a neat way for training awareness. Plus, it makes Jainism into the only world religion which has never led a holy war. Buddhism failed that test of time.

Jainism has also been a smallish sect, localized to one spot in India, whereas Buddhism has multiplied into a huge amount of differing sects across huge swaths of various continents, each one promulgating a different 'Buddhism.' So it's not fair to make the two compete really. It's less fair to make the two compete as an outsider of both, like betting on a horserace.

Taoists have gone to war?

I was jest funnin.' I routinely avoid stepping on baby lizards and constantly chase them in my house so they won't dry up and die. I capture and free Palmetto Bugs (giant flying roaches) at times (I admit to spraying them sometimes). I even save tiny ants from my swimming pool. Of course, I also eat meat, so I'm not consistent with non-killing. Even vegetable life seems to react on test equipment to threats of cutting and burning, so all of life has some consciousness, and we all have to eat. I eat mammals very very sparingly, maybe once a week a burger. Turkeys and fish beware. I respect radical non-violence to sentient creatures.

I'm not sure, but I think they associated a little too closely with the emperor in and after the Tang dynasty.

Yes, but this may be a wrong paradigm for what the Jains do. One may argue that the radicality of their behaviour makes it nonsensical - random fractal effects, like putting a glass of water on the table, may result in more insects being killed than are saved by filtering one's breath.

However, the point of their behaviour may not be the actual saving of the animals, but the associated change of cosnciousness. In that case their behaviour is rational, and to criticize their ethics on the base of external effects is like saying that it is nonsensical to read books because there are too many letters on the world.

I dont want to bad mouth the religion, but when did protecting insects become a spiritual act? Dear lord, thats as bad as the belief that the soul of anything you kill stays to haunt you.

As long as they dont infringe apon my reality, they will live (talking insects). Sounds selfish and down right inhumain, can't help it, I kill that which I fear. A victim of man's primitive nature.

Goddamn, it's not about the insect, it is about your mind. It is the change of consciousness which makes it a spiritual act. Here's something from the link fireworks_god posted:

She could run now, and probably outdistance the predator, but in running she'd take the ant with her. The ant would surely die, separated from its colony. There was no guarantee the ant would survive the violence of the tiger attack either, but its chances were better here than down the path. She got up and moved a few meters away. She did not want the ants' nest to be crushed under the tiger's paws, or by her own body as the tiger tore it apart; nor did she want any ants to be drowned in her blood.

That is worrying about an ant while being killed by a tiger. Suppose you do this seriously - live like that - then that is definitely spiritual; it is a major change of consciousness penetrating your whole beingness down into whatever area you may localize that which you call 'spirit' in.

You will never have a bad trip again.
