Penis Envy?

So while up in northern California (Bishop)I was walking along in the forest and was just scouting mushrooms and from out of the ground I see a couple caps popping out of the ground like potatoes. I pull em out and the stem was chilling in the ground. I would like to know if they are in-fact penis envy mushrooms. They bruised blue on the stem and then turned to a more green bruise.

Thank you for your time.

without a spore print, most likely you aren't going to be able to tell.

Definitely not Penis Envy. That refers to a cultivated strain of Psilocybe cubensis. I don't know if that strain would retain the characterstic phallic shape in the wild. In any case, Psilocybe cubensis would not grow in California, nor would it grow in a forest. Are you sure about the blue-bruising? There is not even a slight hint of that in your pictures. If there is blue bruising, it could be a blue-staining bolete. In any case, definitely not a hallucinogenic mushroom.

Agreed. Especially since cubes don't grow wild in N california, nor do they grow in forests. Cool mushrooms though. RR

Penis Envy is not a type or species of mushroom, it is a selectively cultivated "strain" of Psilocybe cubensis.
Psilocybe cubensis is not native to California.

They bruised blue for sure. Not as soon as I picked em but maybe an hour later I looked at em' and the stem was blue. The next day green. They dont have gills just spores. But very intresting stuff. Mushrooms are neat as all hell.

YESSUP, porcinis don't stain blue. However, the gills may turn an olive green with age. I agree with the Bolete genus, but perhaps a different species if the mushroom stained blue.
IEndMe, "spores" and "pores" are different. The pores of Boletes and other mushrooms are the structure that the spores develop and are released from at maturity. The pores of these mushrooms serve the same purpose as the gills do in other mushroom species.

It's a bolete of some kind. The yellow sponge instead of gills and the green staining ID it. Just take a small taste raw and you will immediately know if it's an edible bolete or not. The non-edible ones taste horribly bitter, and you'll want to spit it back out. None, even the non-edible ones are 'very' toxic, so don't worry about taking a taste. If it tastes like a mushroom, fry those babies up. RR
