Burning in jars
    #5865600 - 07/16/06 01:42 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, i made 6 jars and have pressure cooked 3 of them so far, i put 1 inch water in the pc then set the 3 jars in there. I then set it on the stove and turned it to high until steamed started to come out then reduced heat to inbetween the low and medium setting. I then started my time and pc'ed for an hour at 10 psi (that's all this pc can do) Problem is, when it was done, i let it cool a bit then opened the pc and the jars had a few burnt spots in them. Is this normal? I don't wanna ruin my other 3 jars so i haven't pc'ed them yet. any help would be appretiated greatly thanx....

No. 1 hour is way too long. 30 min is about right, 45 min max.

Also you should put your jars in, THEN adjust the water level. You also need to have something on the bottom of your PC. A rack, or a wet towel.

See here for a review of how to use a pressure cooker...

I would. The water content is probably messed up.

i had some jars that did the same and they worked out great. was 100 percent colonized in 13 days. i wouldent toss them just inject a cc or 2 more spore water in them and it should work fine.

a drier substrate will colonize faster, just have to make sure you either spawn it to a nice moist bulk, or dunk it real good if it's a pf cake

there's a few things you can do to fix this
first, an hour at 10psi is fine, i wouldn't do 30 minutes...probably not even 45 minutes like fred suggests...
1, put a towel at the bottom of the pc before you put the jars in.
2, don't start the stove on high. start on medium and let it build pressure more slowly
3, you can put a bit more water in there, but if you do the first 2 steps you probably won't need more water.

.peace

Then you're not following the tek. PF Tek is 12 psi for 30 minutes. One hour is overcooked.

I suggest NOT deviating from the PF Tek. It's been proven and time tested. It's not wise to just guess a random sterilization time and use it.

http://www.fanaticus.com/sub-prep.htm

If you're worried about the 2 psi difference in sterilization pressure then you should convert the time from 12 psi to 10 psi. For every 10C increase or decrease in temp you need to half or double sterilization time.

So 30 min at 12 psi (117.8C) = ~39 min @ 10 psi (115C)
or ~21 min @ 15 psi (120C)

Hope this clears things up.

EDIT: Corrected a math mistake. My bad.
