Oh and check out the two little club like things. I believe it is a type of Cordyceps. You can see them on the news paper by the black trumpets at the bottom of the photo. Cordyceps militaris Cordyceps ophioglossoides Possibly this one Cordyceps japonica Cordyceps ravenellii

I also found black trumpets today, picked about half a pound. I have never found them in this area before. They seem to be exploding this year!
Any good recipes for these? I have only eaten them once before, sauteed in butter, and I was a little disappointed. I'm thinking of using them in a beef gravy. If anybody has a good black trumpet recipe, please post.

Nice haul, I found about 3 ounces yesterday,

they are in a white quart bowl, I'm drying them in the refridgerator.
The cordyceps may be an earth tongue, I can't tell from the picture. Cordyceps the head of the mushroom is usually different than the stem, usually sort of bumpy. The earth tongues the texture is the same all over.
Shroomydan, mix one to one, sour cream and cream cheese and then add some chopped dried trumpets. I rehydrate them and cook them a little, I'm probably being over cautious. Very good dip.

Yeah i noticed the earth tonges out today. The stem was smooth and yellow/brown the cap or head was about a half inch long redbrown and ruff textured i didn't find any earth tonges in my books that matched. but it does look a lot like this. Cordyceps ophioglossoides

good question. The two were coming out from under a rock. Possibly from a dead host insect, that burowed under it for shelter? I am keeping my eye out for more and next go round will be more coutious.

Will do if i ever find another......
On a side note all those mushrooms just got me a dinner for two plus drinks at a joint that would probably cost me 100+ $ for an evening. Not bad for a pound of mushrooms. But it did take me almost five hours in picking time and bouncing around.

its hard to miss them when they are wet. I mean its darker then all the litter and stands above it.
But when they dry out a day they are different shades of brown. That and the funnel splits and blends in. I look for bair spots and mounds of moss on hill sides. Well that where i look right now. If i find a different spot then maybe it will be different.

It's funny- I just read an old NGeographic article on some high South American mountains and it had this pic of a tiny, pin looking mushroom that I thought was titled codyceps ? that was growing on an ant. Wierdest thing- the mushroom parasitized(sp?) the ant. The shit was nuts looking.

What kind of habitat are you finding these things? I've been looking for them in Georgia for about 3 years and haven't found a single one.
How do they compare to other edibles as far as flavor and texture go?

Not bad for a pound of mushrooms. That's a lot of black trumpets. Good deal, you made the cooks happy.
>Gumby, what Corporal Kielbasa said, look for moss under oaks on a hillside, better luck if its right below a spot that is flat with moss and oaks and then drops off with moss and oaks. You need like more than an inch of rain in the week before you look to have any chance of finding any. Trumpets like it really humid, most of the boletes you find near them will have been attacked by hypomyces.

I found them along the shore of lake george, underneath pine trees growing on moss in a rather wind-riddled section of land...

Are you sure they were trumpets? There is a closely related species that is just is good that grows under pine, look very much like them, and are just as good, I can't remember the species name, I haven't found them yet.
editLooked in Mushrooms Demystified, it is found under conifers, C. Cornucpioides is anyway, the look alike I was thinking of was Polyozellus multiplex.
I will keep my eyes out under pine. What time of year did you find them? What was the weather like?

the area I found them at was on the east side of a large lake which has little vegetation other than the tall pine trees because there are always high winds.

state park land too... as soon as you get 150 yds away from shore the ground is thick with duff and rotting wood... The ranger there saw me looking at the mushrooms and talked to me for a bit... He was a really cool guy.
