Remember This?
    #5864852 - 07/16/06 09:57 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Last year I came across this fingered Jelly..(looks like fingers in a peace sign)
A few folks asked what it was but I never saw it again.
Its the only place I have seen it.

OK so a couple weeks ago I walked threw the woods to see if it was back and it was..
But this time it was there but it was orange and it was dried out like leather.
So I stuck this lil chunk in my back pack and was off to continue my hunt.
I got home that night hung my pack up and forgot about the wood inside for a few days.
I pulled it back out and looked at it. It was dry the same as when I found it and I figured id toss it in my fish tank (most of you have seen it) Now get this I walked in the house to get a Beer and I walk back out and this dry frizzled up lil fungus had snapped back into its shape I had seen over a year ago..

What blows my mind is how fast this lil dry fungus absorbed over 10X its weight in water in about 5 mn..
Oh well I still have no clue exactly what kind of Jelly it is but I have it above my fish tank now and its cool to pull it out let it dry out and then stick it back in the water and watch it puff back out!

Cheers!

this is a diffrent type that grows on hardwood
i have seen this type of jelly turn 3 diffrent colors
almost clear then orange to redish brown

the other day i was out hunting and i came across this jelly growing somewhere else
this time it was redish orange and when i touched it
it would bruise blackish/purple

According to my book it looks like it might be either Calocera cornea or Calocera viscosa which both dry orange. Calocera glossoides looks similar but dries blackish brown.

On a second look I think Calocera viscosa can be ruled out as it has a more Ramaria like coral appearance.

My book covers British and European fungi though so I may be way out lol
