Questions on straw and humidification

1) Will this work? Follow the PF Tek as normal, than take non-cut-up oat or wheat straw, put it in a pot of water and heat for 15 minutes to saturate, then put it in a baggy, sterilize for 1 hour in pot with clothe at the bottom to prevent meltage, than squeeze out excess water, mix in a cake and let colonize, once done colonizing, put the cake in the terrarium as normal and let grow.
2) What is the ratio of cake to straw?
3) If plastic bags wont work, what will?
4) What type of humidity do I need for these cakes? 90-95% like normal PF style cakes?
5) When will I know I need to clean my perlite?
6) How do I clean my perlite without taking it out of the terrarium?
7) With a fish tank bubbler that has one hose output, how many times a day will I need to fan?
Haha I just bombarded myself with questions after reading some straw Teks and humidity Teks. Straw looks to be an easy way to make cakes and have a good amount of shrooms without casing. I'm very happy about that

8) How much does a bail of straw cost usually? Other than a farm, where can I get it?
I have used the search and found answers to questions 4 & 7 but after searching through hundreds of pages of posts I can't find any other answers.
Help?

Make sure you get STRAW, not HAY. And you can find it at any pet store in the small animal bedding area. I'm pretty sure your idea with the bag and everything will not work, but you can try if you want. I do believe there are pretty simple straw log teks out there for you to follow, I personally have never had an interest in using straw other than to mix with my HPOO.
anyways, have fun you little experimenting man!

5. you will know when you smell something or see stuff growing off it. I never wait too long to clean mine...usually after a grow.
6. you don't...take the perlite out and rinse it in bleachy water in some kind of a bucket or container.
7. depending on the output of the airpump...you might not have to hand fan at all.
8. The price on a bail of straw varies...you will find straw cheaper at a Feed Store or a Grainge. I think I used to pay just under $4 for a bail. You can find mini bails at hobby and floral supply places, like Micheals(our local one).
I don't like using straw. It's a pain in my ass. So I stopped using it.

Thanks! Whats the cake to straw ratio though, and what type of bag can be used to sterilize the straw in? Should I just dump my jars out, fill those jars with straw and sterilize like that? Than take that straw and the cake (however much that ratio is) put them in a big plastic sterilized baggy and let it turn into a cake?
Oh and roadkill, why is it a pain in the ass? It seems pretty damn simple. Is there like a lot of contams or something?

Already read them, I'm going by this one. I can't see it being any more a pain in the ass then casing a cake, someone has to explain why. http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7938
Still, can you answer the previous questions.

people dont like straw for a lot of reasons... It's messy, a pain in the ass to cut up into 1-3 inch chunks, doesn't hold a ton of water, takes up a lot of room, smells bad, contaminates rather easily, etc etc, i'm sure there's a lot of people who don't mind all of the above, but I'd rather get delicious, healthy, robust, full of nutrient horse poop and mix it with the straw, that'll set my panties ablaze any ole day.

The bad smell I can deal with , the contamination- at what point does it usually contaminate? As long as I sterilize correctly and isolate contaminations, I still think it's worth doing. The water thing, I can just inject it with some after ever flush. As for the taking up lots of room, do you think all 12 will fit in a 1.5 foot high, 1.5 foot wide, and 2 foot long terrarium, or will I need two?
Also, ANYONE know the ratio?

4:1
straw to cakes
you can go up to 10:1, but it is not recommended. with straw though, you'll have a better shot at a lower ratio.

THANK YOU! I think I'll go with 4:1 or less anyway, I don't have all that much room. I might just turn my terrarium into a giant monotub if I really can't fit it all, and even if i do fit it all, i couldn't imagine the perlite keeping the place humid enough for these cakes with so much of its surface area being covered... maybe i'll look into getting a cool mist/hose thanger.
Again, thanks
