1.5kg x veal shanks(osso bucco) 1/2 a large leek (sliced) 1 x medium onion(chopped) 3 x cloves of garlic (minced or chopped) seasoned flour i x can of diced tomatoes(or some kind of spaghetti sauce in a bottle) 1 x tbs of tomato paste(or 3tbs x tomato sauce/ketchup) 1 x cup of white wine 3tbs x olive or canola oil 1 x cup of beef stock(just melt a beef cube in a cup of boiling water)
dredge meat on the bones with seasoned flour(cover in flour) then brown them in the olive oil and remove from pot(we use a stainless steel pot) add onions, garlic and leeks to the pot you just browned the meat in and cook them down to a clear kinda consistency now throw the meat back in and pour in the white wine cook for a few seconds throw in the can of chopped tomatos throw in the cup of beef stock and the tomato paste give it all a stir and bring to the boil then turn low and simmer covered for 1.5 to 2hrs season to taste serve it with mashed potato or rice
you can throw chopped carrots in with the leeks if you like too
if you have sauce left over throw in the freezer up to a couple of months and use it on pasta or have it the next day on pasta
its cheap and filling

I used to prepare that dish 10 years ago when I was working at a 4-star Country Club...that's about how we did it!! On a much larger scale, mind you. I believe we went heavier on the leeks, if I 'member right. Looks Great!! Peace

Looks tasty. I'm a personal fan of the roasted marrow, just the veal(or beef) femurs cut into 1.5 inch pieces and roasted in a hot oven. Then scoop out that goodness onto some toasted bread, little dash of the fleur de sel, MmMMmmm...

You should check out my Minnesota Chow Mein pics. Made with beef shanks.
Beef Shanks.

Asian flavors go great with shank meat. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post2233896

Kikka makes them for local grocery stores around here. I like the Veggie spring rolls. They come with a peanut dipping sauce. I eat almost daily cause the sushi cheff makes them right in my store and she gives me the day old stuff shes going to throw away.

yeah thats the ones wth the peanut butter/satay sauce those are good! another thing i tried around here was those sweet rice cakes, those are wierd but the nicest treats are in cabramatta, there's a shop that has this little machine that makes little custard filled cakes, its like a little conveyor belt machine that spits them out while you wait
i'll take some pics next time i'm in there
