2nd gen grow concerns
    #5864452 - 07/16/06 06:16 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I have jsut grown my second project and i used 2nd gen mycelium, and could i ever tell the difference. alot of mutated caps, dark swrils on the caps. the only thing i'm not sure about is there were a few mushies that had a weird gray/green tint to them. unfortunitly i don't have any pics caus ethey are all picked and dried. but i was wondering if this maybe normal. the discolored ones were picked from a casing that produced relitivley normal mushies, aside from shape, ect. would these be fine to eat or not.

ime: the dark swirls on the caps were spores, not mutations. and the gray/green was most likely bruising. either from over-handling or a lack of moisture in the casing or low humidity.

the thing about the dark caps is that the tallest mushrooms had them too. so they weren't under another mushroom at anytime to get them dropped on them.

as for the grey/green color hopfully its just moisture cause i had not touch them once since they started

You might have some verticulium, which causes mutations, harmless to humans but really common in cubies. Discoloration, brown stripes, and malformed fruit bodies are the typical symptoms.

spores float in the air a bit, and always end up on top of the caps... totally normal, there doesn't have to be a mushroom above it for spores to land on top of it.
