Bolete question.
    #5863695 - 07/16/06 12:17 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Are there any species of Bolete that grow very small (the cap about the size of a nickel), and grow on a wood substrate?

The reason I ask is because while on a brisk hike I ran into a number of these small mushrooms all growing on wood, and they all had pores.

The caps were a darker rusty type red color with a creme stem.

The pores (for lack of gills) were also creme colored.

At the base of each stem where is attached to the wood it would fade from creme to black spreading out onto the wood, maybe as a way of staying firmly attached?

It has not rained in awhile, so they were all fairly dried out.

I didn't have a cam on me due to the mindset of just out for a hike so sorry about that.

Polypores (which, hence the name, also have pores not gills)are found growing on wood, they can be smaller, but boletes can also be that size as they are growing in their pin stages. I am guessing you found some sort of polypore because they are so prefferable to wood substrate.

Yeah i hate when people claim a mushroom is boletus because it has pores...many genus have pores such as Tylopilus, Leccinum and Strobilomyces to name a few. post a pic if u can and i can probably tell you what it is.

::Sshrug::  It was a good question...
seeing as many people, myself included, refer to Boletes as pored mushrooms, which is easily misconstrued as seeming that any pored mushroom is a Bolete.

Thanks Cat

And D.A, I realize that there are other pored mushrooms, I was merely asking if it was possible that the specific mushroom I found could indeed be a Bolete, and  if there were any species of them that grew on a wood substrate.

PS: thanks Cat for the help, I will look into the other genus you suggested.

This has most of the physical features of what I found exept for the coloration. I could not find any polypore that comepletely matched what I found.
