Who are the surfers here? *UPDATED- new board pics*

I think I'll finally have my first board here shortly. My brother has been trying to get me to learn for over a decade but I never lived near the ocean. Now that I'm living on the beach its time to do it. I'm lucky to be surrounded by friends here who have many years of experience and are eager to teach me. And they are also able help me pick out the proper board for my first one. Including my boss who grew up in SoCal and has been surfing 35 years. He gets all his boards made by a guy right here in San Diego and so hes gonna give him a call and see what kind of deal he can get for me. Possibly even have a board shaped for me so I can get it customized (rather then buy one off the rack). I'm just waiting to hear back from him on that. So assuming he can pull together a deal for me I should be surfing on a TDK board here soon. Either way, I'll be surfing on something!
So who's the SoCal surfers here? You should all come surf with me and laugh at me while I am learning. I don't mind being the butt of all the jokes for a while. It'll be a blast!!

That's awesome.
When I was younger, I wanted to learn to surf. Then we stopped vacationing at the ocean and my ambition for it dwindled.
But if I happen to travel to a coast somewhere, it's on.

I'm from socal as well, but I'm up north now. I used to longboard at san onofre a lot. Are you getting a longboard or a shortboard?

More like an inbetween board.
I'm gonna get a nice big egg. I was looking at 7' to 7'6" but now I'm thinking I'm going all the way to an 8'. I'm a kinda big guy and I want the extra flotation, easier paddling and all around ease of catching waves. And with a nice big 'funboard' like that I should have a much easier time catching my first waves and learning to stand/ride. A board like this will never perform like a shortboard but its not quite as bulky as a true longboard. And from what guys are telling me they actually perform rather well as your skills progress (turning, etc.). And eventually, if I want, I'll just go get a shortboard also. And I'll always be happy to have my nice big board for days when the waves are tiny.
"Fun Boards" More "Fun Boards" ...and more ok...last one

I was doing some wakeboarding this weekend, fucking awesome but kills your arms if you dont workout regularly. I snowboard and used to skateboard. I'd be up for some surfing in san diego. I'll be in town next week, I should give you a shout and maybe rent a board and give it a shot. I've always wanted to try it.

Do you guys know the basics?
Make sure you paddle hard before the wave comes, grab the sides and lift your chest up as you catch it (this is where you gather your balance and initially aim your board), then push yourself onto your feet. At no point should your knees rest on the board as you get up.
If your nose catches in the water while you're lifting yourself up with your arms, you need to back up on your board a little (while on your stomach).
If you're too far back, it'll be harder to catch the wave. It takes a little experimenting to find the sweet spot, and will sometimes change depending on the wave shape.
Anyway, have fun and good luck

I'm jealous, I haven't been in about a year. I've had to settle with bodysurfing here and there.

OK...After much consideration, investigation, conversation and debate I decided to go for a longboard. It just makes the most sense in my situation. Since I am a beginner (and a big guy also) it will be easier to catch a lot of waves and learn to stand and ride. And with that much flotation I can just take it out and paddle it around the pier for exercise to get my arms in shape.
Its a gorgeous board, all 9 feet 5 inches of it! And I opted to spend a little extra for a board that will be durable and last as long as I take care of it. Its a tripple stringer and has nose and tail blocks also. And its got a three fin system which will allow me to customize it to my likings.
God I love new toys!

Man, I'm fucking sore!! Feels good though. Spent a couple hours surfing yesterday morning and a couple more in the afternoon. And I have much more respect for those who surf and make it look so easy! Just paddling out for the first time is a humbling experience, especially on a longboard that you can't duckdive under the waves. I was tired before I even tried to catch my first wave. And the first time you get held down by the wave that just ate you for lunch will give you a whole new respect for the power of the surf!
But there is nothing like that feeling when the ocean rises up and draws you along. You suddenly become one with the wave for a few fleeting moments....before it eats you.
Wanted to paddle out this afternoon but conditions suck. Small mixed swell and onshore winds make for a sloppy and unpredictable beach break. Nothing but boogie-boarders even bothering with it today.
