So, if anyone has ever read this book, you may be able to help me in getting a few other people hip to this book.
It is such a great book, and it is more like a compilation of short stories than anything else.
Here is the wiki article regarding it...
Quote:
Trout Fishing in America is a book published by Richard Brautigan in 1967. This is Brautigan's first novel. He wrote it before A Confederate General From Big Sur which was published first. The phrase "Trout Fishing in America" is used in multiple ways: It is the title of the book, a character, a hotel, the act of fishing itself, a modifier (there is a character named Trout Fishing in America Shorty), etc. Trout Fishing in America is an abstract book whithout a clear central storyine. Instead, the book contains a series of anecdotes broken into chapters, with the same characters often reappearing from story to story. Several symbolic objects, such as a mayonnaise jar, reappear throughout the book.
I first read the book when I was 12, and have read it about 8 times since then. It isn't very thick, might not even be 100 pages, but a gem of a read.

A very enjoyable and humorous read. It for some reason makes me think of "Hitchiker's Guide" and Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant". But it has been 30 years since I read it and this is just long ago associations. I do remember I very much enjoyed reading it and bought about 20 yds of a trout stream from Sears, I think it was. Had it delivered and set up and the next day was fishing.

thats it! I was trying to think of who to cross reference him with Douglas Adams, and that is on the money.
So people, imagine a perfect love child of douglas adams and arlo guthrie and you have richard brautigan.
I liked every story in the book, and the purchasing of trout strem was a good one, but my favorite was the kool-aid wino. It was so visual, and the first time I watched the very end of Gummo, it reminded me of that story.

Hey psilocyberin, check the top referred post, which you made about a year ago. I did not at all view it before I made my post, that was straight off the top of my head, but you have some serious memory issues.

I guess I made the analogy and then forgot about it.
