Ok, I was wondering if is possible to make a contam free spore print from a shroom that i find in a cow field? If so, what do I need to do? I was thinking that I could sterilize a canning jar, exacto knife, and a needle. Then when I come across a mushroom in the wild, cut it and pick it with a needle and put it in the jar and loosely seal the lid. Then follow the normal instructions for making a print. Should I let some of the initial spores drop and discard them and place the mushroom in another jar thats contam free. Im thinking that the initial spores would have the most contaminents on them, so that would be best. If this is a good idea, how long should i wait until i swap jars for the 2nd spore set? Any other ideas or any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

possible but not likely.
you would do better to use a container with alum foil. lay the alum foil on the inside...wipe with alcohol with a cotton ball. and put the containers lid on.
when you get out to the field take the cap from the mushroom... cut the stem away...as close to the gills as possible. open the container and lay the cap down onto the alum foil (gills down)... and close the lid.
have another container at home with alum foil ready.
after 8 or 10 hours... remove the cap and transfer the cap to the other container. throw the alum foil away from the the 1st container that you used in the field. If there are any contams they will probably drop on this 1st peice of foil.
wait 10 to 12 hours for the 2nd container... check and see if the spores fell onto the alum foil. wait longer if need be. When you have a dark print your ready to try and use it.
But there is no guaranty that this will be contam free. The best way to use wild prints from the field is to work with agar.
good luck!~

Odds are about the same as winning the mega bucks lottery.
Best bet is take along a sterile test tube, with a stopper.
Fill the tube 1/2 way with 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Using sanitized scissors, clip off a thick stem, about 2 inch's long.
Insert that into the tube.
Once home, ASAP, using the biggest sterile syringe needle you have.
Insert it into the stem, bend the stem, and rotate the needle.
That should get you a clean core biopsy sample.
Then, inject that core sample into a pre - prepared LC.
Odds are fairly good, you may end up with a clean LC.

Thanks so much for your help. I wasnt expecting a response so fast. Ok, I might be better off ordering a sryinge, but i dont think anyone will ship to GA.
trippinthru: ive got the first couple of steps down, but can you give a little more details on this:
That should get you a clean core biopsy sample.
Then, inject that core sample into a pre - prepared LC.
Odds are fairly good, you may end up with a clean LC.
What is an LC? I searched around but couldnt find out. Does the core sample have spores? What do I do with it? What do I need and what should I read?
Thanks again for all your help.

You can get a clean enough print to use, here's how. Get a piece of hardware cloth and suspend it 1" above the foil or paper you're going to print to. Place the cap on the hardware cloth and allow it to drop spores for a couple of hours until you can just see the spores on the print. Remove the cap and use the print. Do the above in a glovebox or tupperware container. Don't allow the cap to come in contact with the printing paper or foil at any time. If the cap is especially dirty, wash the top side of it with iodine, but be careful not to let any get on the gills. RR
