DMT Plant Sources
    #584449 - 03/20/02 04:33 PM (22 years, 14 days ago)

So what is the best plant source for dmt.
I need something thats fast to grow with plent of plant matter to extract the dmt.
I think using phalaris is probably a waste of time and i cant seem to find a source
for Mimosa hostilis seeds although it would probably take years to get a decent amount. Any Ideas

I tried once Phalaris, and yes, it's true: it's a waste of time and specially of solvent. The content is too small compared to the volume of the material.

To extract Mimosa hostilis (teuniflora) was really easy with a good result. You can get the seeds at some ethnobotanical company, but the problem is not to get the seed, rather to germinate them. I had no success on growing this plant.
The second problem is that it takes years to grow, and problably when your plant would be ready for an extraction, you would like it so much, that you wouldn't want to extract it

There are other grasses like Phragmitides australis (or maybe comunis also) that have DMT in their rhyzome. The advantage is that it grows fast and the rhyzome is compact (no huge volumen of solvent is needed).
Now, if you want to know where to get some seed, well I don't know... But Phragmitides is a common plant, used much in ponds. Probably you can get bulk amounts of seed in some non ethnobotanical company, therefore paying a lot less money...

Good luck,

Elektrolurch

hello yes phragmites is a good source i did a study a while back and found that late spring early summer before the plant flowers is the best time to harvest out of approx. 120g of wet root (dont take much to make this amount wet) the yield was 200mg of alkaloids. also lespedeza, desmanthus, desmodium are interesting specie to study. phalaris is a good source if you cultivate it right. and have a good specie.( this i know from personal experience). peace

The normal acid/base extraction for alcaloids with dichrolmethane (a brother of chloroform) as a solvent and KOH/HCl as base/acid.

Here is a short description:

The bark was grounded with a coffee mill. Let it sit at 40 C in acidic water with a pH of 5 (kept at that level by applying small amounts of acid) for 30 min to 1 hour. Filtrated the bark/water mixture.

Applied KOH to get a pH of 8.5 to 9 (carefull: higher pH destrois alcaloids)
The water/dichlormethane mixture was centrifugated to separate the emulsion easily.

The dichlormethane was taken. Now it depends on what is wanted: a free base or a salt. The dichlormethane contains the free base, if evaporated you get smokable free base, which isn't very stable and gets destroid after a while.
If a salt is wanted, concentrated HCl can be used (only some drops) to get a precipitated salt.

The results were: about 200 mg of alcaloids (having high concentration of DMT, see picture below) out of 40 g of M. teuniflora bought for 8 USD a kilo in a normal mexican market.

In the picture you can see two chromatographies of the result, treated with Dragendorf to visualize the alcaloids. Two solutions for the chromatography were used, the best was:

CHCl3 ca. 85%
MeOH(Methanol) ca. 15%
NH3 some drops

Good luck,

Elektrolurch

Here is the best website I have found so far on DMT extraction. http://digilander.iol.it/irimias/dmt_guide.html
I am so eager to try experiments but my current living situation forces me to wait until another day.

Alkaloids reported as (mg) per (100g) raw dried plant, and as percent of total plant source weight:
Acacia bark
0.71% NN-DMT
Acacia maidenii bark
0.36% NN-DMT
Acacia simplicifolia bark
0.86% NN-DMT
Mimosa hostilis root (bark)
0.57% NN-DMT
Virola shoots & flowers
0.44% NN-DMT
Desmanthus illinoensis root (bark)
0.34% NN-DMT
Pilocarpus organensis
1.06% 5-MeO-DMT
Phalaris tuberosa
0.10% NN-DMT
0.022% 5-MeO-DMT
0.005% 5-OH-DMT
Phalaris arundinacea ('net gossip)
0.060% NN-DMT
?? 5-MeO-DMT
Psychotria species (averaged, from Jonathan Ott)
0.200% NN-DMT
