How do you like AFI's Decemberunderground?

I think The Art of Drowning and Sing the Sorrow were absolutely beautifully written...and I think they sold out with this new one. It sounds like somebody trying to sound like AFI, only it IS AFI.
Maybe it's gotta grow on me...

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I'm trying to give it a chance, given it about 6 listens. I can dig on some of the poppier stuff for what it is, like the song with the lyric "Under a summer rain, I burned away" or the one song that sound like a U2 song in the chorus. Even though I dislike U2. The opening track is pretty good. But the album is overproduced, the band doesn't seem to be growing. Especially Davey. I've had quite enough of his "The future's bright...without me", boo hoo hoo life is pain posturing. What's the guy got to be sad about? He's healthy and wealthy so he should just quit his damn whining, but I guess that's what AFI is all about, lyrically anyway, as is all "punk rock" as quasi-punk as AFI is.
Black Sails was the peak I'd say. Art of Drwoning developed those ideas and Sing the Sorrow was quite a bit poppier but still was considerably experimental. I even liked the poppier stuff on STS like This Celluloid Dream. Especially the way the rhythm of Davey's Chorus skipped over the music ("You land as lightly as the new snow..."). I dunno, I'll probably give the new one a few more listens but I'm not expecting much.

Decemberunderground sees the influential west coast band begin to outgrow their punk rock roots in favor of ink black alt-rock with a melodic undercurrent. AFI are as darkly poetic as ever, but this time the emphasis is on mid-tempo gloom rock rather than rapid fire punk anthems. More poppy than punk but still catchy.

I agree.
They have definitely come a long way from 'Answer That and Stay Fashionable' days and outgrown their punk roots.

I finally gave Black Sails a listen, and I love it. I actually ressurected this thread because Decemberunderground has grown on me, and I really enjoy it now
