Metrosexualism
    #5858697 - 07/14/06 05:07 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

This is such a strange phenomenon to me. Does anybody else find it weird when men devote insane amounts of time and money to their wardrobe and appearance?

I was just in a Banana Republic store and I felt like a fish out of water. It freaked me out as I walked past guys with button up shirts and perfectly coifed hair while I had my Guns N' Roses t-shirt on. $80 for a pair of ripped jeans? $50 for a fucking T-shirt? And why do all of the clerks wear headsets? Is the world of upscale retail that breathtakingly exciting that they must converse with each other? "This guy just bought three pairs of jeans and a shirt!".

I certainly don't mean to sound like an asshole with these observations. If anybody here happens to be a metro then that's cool. I'm not going to diss you. I just like to observe social phenomenona.

Discuss.

Well if you want to go to the nice nightclubs and have a chance at scoring you better dress for the occasion.

Good point. It just freaks me the fuck out to even think of dressing like that. It's on par with asking me to hold hands with another man or something.

Perhaps this phenomenon is due to a very passive father figure in early developmental years?

My little cousin definitely seems to fall into this category. As a young child (maybe 6 or 7 years old) he was really into painting his nails and playing with Barbie dolls (yes, Barbie dolls). Now he's like 11 I think and he certainly has a large wardrobe and is always excited to go shopping for new clothes. It seems almost as if he identifies more with his mother than with his father.

if spending $200 on a outfit to wear to the bar is what it takes to impress women, then I'm still not surprised I'm single. I don't think I would date a chick that went to a "nightclub" anyways.

That kid sounds gay to me.

Metro guys are as straight as can be.  They exhibit no feminine characteristics other than being super into their appearance.

I'm just a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy I guess.

Who knows then. To each their own I guess, eh? I'm with you on the jeans and t-shirt though, it's a fucking comfortable way to dress.

I'm a t-shirt and jeans guy myself.  I don't spend lots of money on clothing as I tend to like to spend my small amount of surplus income on other shit.

I don't really worry about looking good cause if you buy clothes that are nice enough in the first place, you never have to worry.

I'm a guy, I'm cool either being naked or in a suit or anything in between.    If it's not comfortable I don't bother with it.  All to impress the ladies?  Fuck that.  I've got my winning personality and charisma to take care of that...  :smirk:

It's not the "concern about appearance" thing that bothers. Everybody is concerned about their appearance (whether they admit it or not). I am just freaked out by high fashion. It just seems very contrived.

Also, I grew up in a rural town. The men around me wore jeans, t-shirts, flannel shirts, boots, and sneakers. So, high levels of fashion are the opposite of what I was raised on.

You mean like 95% of the girls? Besides when you go out and party your appearance and clothes is what girls will notice first and you don't really get that many seconds to make an impression so its best to make em count. Don't hate the players, hate the game.

The Banana Republic store is near where I live. I was out for a walk and I thought, "What the hell...I'll go check it out". I have no desire to purchase clothes from there.

1980's movie prep style!  I went to a Halloween party dressed as an obnoxious 1980's movie prep once.  I had on khaki's, a nice shirt, and the sweater around the shoulders.

Actually they have the buttons down the side of the legs just incase you need to get completely naked in three seconds. And the chance of getting cum on $130 pair of jeans? You obviously don't know gay guys, they like gay sex but they dont like gay sex that much.

Remember; the point of advertising is "you're broken and we can fix you ...for a price."

You haven't lost your mind. They have. Keep that in mind at all times.

In a casual setting I dress comfortably and sloppy. I'm usually in a non-casual setting, and don't dress too casually.

Now I'm not trying to sound all toadie on anyone, but I dress to the occasion. I'm not metro either. I don't do my nails, my eyebrows, and I have more hair on my chest then most men.

Dress to the occasion and you can go more places without standing out. Dress to impress if you want that first impression. Without that first impression the odds of getting to the personality stage falls dramatically.

Just a note here, looking "sexy" (speaking as a guy) really shouldn't involve having to have frosted hair, 200 bucks a bottle cologne and look like you just climbed off of an Abercrombie/Fitch Twink Calender. It's more about being physically fit and confident. Thats what I am, and I score mad hot bitches.

nice highlights.

my ex was super metro, so were all of his friends and yes secretly I think that they're all gay..but shit it was nice to date someone that you didn't have to worry about what they would show up wearing, like I knew I could bring him to a wedding and he'd probably be better dressed then I was, but at least I didn't have to walk him through it.

At the same time it took him Waaaaay longer to get ready then it ever took me. He also had the tendancy to buy me designer things that he thought I'd like, I'm not really into that, but its the thought that counts, like it would always be something I said I needed, like a hoodie, it would just be some high end hoodie, that I'm afraid to wear in case I wreck it.

Seriously tho, sometimes buying expensive clothes is worth it, in a lot of cases your paying for the cut and comfortable fabric, being so small I'd rather pay a bit more to buy something thats cut right for my body and fits well, then something cheaper thats not so comfortable and looks sloppy.  At the same time, I'm not growing and clothes last me forever (I have had the same jeans for 10 years now) its just a matter of spending cash on things that are basics so you can always wear them.

Well, im not denying that cheap stuff can be comfortable. Guess what I'm wearing right now? An old $15 t-shirt have had for five years and cheap cargo shorts. I'm comfortable. But imho expensive clothes, especially jeans, are just on a whole other level than cheaper stuff. Both those jeans and the white shirt i was talking about stay baby cloth soft no matter how many times they get washed. You just aren't going to get quality like that with cheaper stuff.

In the end as long as the cloth doesn't ball up I'm a happy camper.

And just in case anyone was wondering, these are my favorite t-shirts. 40% of the shirts i wear are these.

I have a couple pairs of jeans that have a lot of rips all down the front of them...

But i've owned them for like 6 years, and i didn't buy them that way.

People in class will ask me if i paid $80 for them, and i have to explain that they are just old jeans. Makes me not want to wear them.

On the flipside, though, you look like a NASCAR driver.

I have mixed feelings about metrosexuals. I enjoy their concern for appearance. Way to many men don't give the slightest shit about their appearance. The thing that bothers me about metrosexuals is that they take it too seriously.... spending $100 on a shirt $200 on a pair of pants, $400 on a pair of shoes, etc. That is ridiculous.

Take the time to groom and dress nice and I love it. Spend a grand on your outfit, haircut, etc then I just get disgusted.

trim/shave same difference

I am fine with either. The only thing I have issue with is overgrown pubic hair.

Yeah, sometimes I'll hit the old pubic region with some scissors. If I don't it looks like a goddamn jungle down there.

I haven't read the thread(other then the first couple posts) but I must say I find this to be a lil odd myself...I dunno I definitely have feminine quality's in the way I feel and think...but u'd never know it to look at me(or to talk to me briefly) I'm not a fan of shoppin and I really don't care about clothes as long as they cover my ass

its time for me to invest some time and money in a new wardrobe(I've recently met someone who I've fallen really hard for and I wanna look good for her when we get together) but I don't even know where to start...I'm sure I'll be bringing a female friend along when I do

Go to the GAP and get some well fitting jeans and make sure you have some well fitting shirts too. IME GAP has the best prices you'll find for high quality clothing, especially jeans.
As far as I'm concerned dressing well is the one thing that metrosexuals got right, at least with the stuff thats not factory torn and what not. Wearing clothes that fit right and look nice is an easy way to up your appeal level with the ladies, and it doesn't have to cost much. I usually just go with some jeans and 2 for $7 hanes plain colored t-shirts.

Well, its a sports jersey for a fighter from chute boxe, not really advertisements. Would you say someone wearing a miami heat jersy is walking advertisement?

Now this is another chute boxe sports shirt that i would agree looks like a walking nascar.
