The poppies and the sun
    #5858562 - 07/14/06 04:17 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

California summer is poppy death USA.

I've tried and tried to get poppies growing, but the seedlings just keep withering away. This intense sun is too much for sun-loving poppies!

I water regularly, but that just isn't enough. The sun bakes them dry, it does!

I suppose I can try again when fall comes around, winters here should be just fine for poppies, it rarely drops below 50.

I was under the impression that they liked a lot of sun and that type of climate. Perhaps if you can get them past the seedling stage they will do fine.
It's common for lots of plants to wither when in the seedling stage from too much sun.

Part of it might depend on the soil... starting them in a small amount of custom mixed, well draining and semi-loose soil until they get strong enough roots to handle the natural soil in the area might work.

Maybe you could even put them in an area with some undergrowth, so that they can be protected from too much direct sun while still small.

They are successfully grown in some harsh, hot, sunny, desert like, rocky areas.

They actually perfer a latitude a little more nothern. Northen US and Europe have a climate they can flourish pretty well in. I'm sure however if you got them a little shade during the summer, and then let them out into the fall and winter sun, they would be fine.
