Pete Coors beer magnate busted DUI

Beer magnate and former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Pete Coors was arrested on a drunken-driving charge and is due to appear in court next week.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper pulled Coors over after he saw him run a stop sign around the corner from his home in Golden at 11:25 p.m. on May 28, according to Coors spokeswoman Kabira Hatland and the citations.

Coors stopped his 2004 green Jaguar in his driveway, and the trooper smelled alcohol, said State Patrol spokesman Trooper Gilbert Mares. Coors failed a field sobriety test, was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Golden Police Department jail, Mares said.

A Breathalyzer test showed he registered a 0.088, which is slightly above the 0.08 blood-alcohol limit in Colorado, Hatland said.

Coors was released from the jail nearly three hours after his arrest, Mares said. Coors was not officially booked, which usually includes fingerprinting and a mug shot, but was held until a sober driver picked him up, Mares said.

"These are common practices that they do," he added. "He was not combative, he was cooperative, and our metro jails like to save their bed space for more serious offenders."

Coors said he was headed home from a wedding reception in Denver.

"I should have planned ahead for a ride," Coors said Thursday in a written statement. "For years, I've advocated the responsible use of our company's products. That's still my message, and our company's message. I am sorry that I didn't follow it myself."

Coors, 59, also was cited for running the stop sign.

When Coors ran for the Senate in 2004, he was criticized for advocating lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18.

In 1994, Coors Brewing Co. had a fatality related to an employee's drunken driving.

Employee Alfredo Rodriguez, 56, drove for less than a mile on company grounds before he slammed into a utility pole, was thrown from his car and died.

Reports say Rodriguez consumed at least a case of beer.

An investigation revealed Rodriguez had been drinking on the job because open beer taps were available to employees in the cafeteria at Coors.

That same year, Coors announced a new beer-drinking policy for employees that said they can drink a maximum of two, 12-ounce beers in the half-hour after their shift ends. The policy is still in place, Hatland said.

The alcohol industry as a whole, including Coors' company, has added responsible-drinking messages to its advertising campaigns in recent years.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving said Coors' arrest was disappointing.

"MADD feels very strongly that high-profile figures should not receive preferential treatment and hope everyone is treated equally," said national spokeswoman Heidi Castle. "Drunk driving is a choice, and anytime people choose to drive while impaired, it's obviously a serious issue, and we want it to be treated as such."

Hatland defended the company's record on safe drinking.

"Pete made a mistake, and he's admitted it, and that does not make the message less important," Hatland said.

Coors is scheduled to appear in Jefferson County Court on Thursday.

I was joking, but I knew it was a rich area so I thought it fit. After seeing their court house I'd say the jail would be fine by me. Then again if it's a rich area it's doubtful many of the residence see that area. Ever.

I wonder if this means they're gonna have to raise the legal limit now so that he didn't break the law. :dumblol:

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Beer baron Peter Coors' driver's license has been revoked by a hearing officer who ruled the executive had been driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said.

Hearing officer Scott Garber ruled Friday that Coors did not stop at a stop sign on May 28 and was driving intoxicated.

Coors, 59, said he had consumed a beer about 30 minutes before leaving a wedding, the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday. He faces a July 20 arraignment and has 30 days to appeal the revocation.

"I made a mistake. I should have planned ahead for a ride," Coors said in a statement. "For years, I've advocated the responsible use of our company's products."

Coors' spokeswoman, Kabira Hatland, said Coors was charged with driving while under the influence. Coors' lawyer, Steve Higgens, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Hatland said that Coors rolled through a stop sign a block from his home in Golden and that an officer stopped him in his driveway.

In one breath test, he registered a blood alcohol level of 0.073 percent. In a second, 20 minutes later, he registered 0.088. In Colorado a blood alcohol count of 0.05 results in a driving while impaired charge, while a count of 0.08 results in driving under the influence.

Legal analyst Scott Robinson said drivers with no previous alcohol convictions are usually held to have driven while impaired, rather than the more serious driving while under the influence. A DWI finding can result in a loss of driving privileges for 90 days; DUI can result in suspension for a year.

Peter Coors "has never even had a moving violation," said Coors spokeswoman Kabira Hatland.

Coors took over as president of his family's company in 1987 and in 2000 was named chief executive of the brewer, with 8,500 employees and $4 billion in sales in 2003. Following a 2005 merger, it is now the Molson Coors Brewing Co.

He'll beat it. .088 is barely over the limit. Being that your B/AC rises or falls at a given rate... between being pulled over and getting a court admissable breathalizer (the one at the jail) he could've actually been under the limit at the time he was driving. A good legal defense could beat this.

Yes, notice how his BAC went UP on the way to jail? That's fucking fishy right there. Unless he just slammed his beer before getting pulled over or something.
